what do you think of this ''utility'' project?

I saw some cheap bubba'd 303's-$75 or so.What about getting one, refinishing the stock with truck bed liner coating, and then installing red dot sights?I;m thinking of a moose-bear gun.Any thoughts?

perfect project in my opinion....good gun for what ya want and not to worried about beating it up....and the price is good...would be into for around or under $200...can't beat that

"...refinishing the stock with truck bed liner coating..." Plain old BLO will be far easier and cheaper. You'll likely find the issue sights on a No. 4 more robust too. No batteries to worry about either.
Always check the headspace on any Lee-Enfield before you shoot it.

If you keep the BLO on it you'll pretty much accomplish the same thing

If a person wants to seal wood with epoxy there's a product called S-1 Sealer that does that very well. Its two part, reasonabley priced, and 3 good coats of this stuff seals wood big time. I haven't tryed it on a rifle stock but I know it would work as long as you prepped the wood right. You need to recoat with an epoxy compatible UV inhibiting 'varnish' if you want a clear finish, or just paint it, as UV rays bugger up epoxy over time.

Gee that BLO's sounding easier all the time.

I figured one advantage of the bed liner is the textured no glare finish, which along with making the stock impervious to water should also make a decent looking finish no matter what shape the wood was in

I think you'd be better off with the cheapest old Parker Hale or Win '94 you could find,....even a sporterized Mauser '98 would be better....or even a '96 Swede.......unless..of course...you just need something to do with your time

I had a 22 mag with trashed wood, bought a spray can of Bedliner spray from Crappy tire, gave it a light coat, you can experiment with distance etc. to alter the texture a bit. Actually didn't turn out too bad and looked pretty good too. Definately a cheap & durable finish, scuffed up the metal and shot that with some Flat Black  Pack it around for a couple Hunting seasons then repaint it when the scrapes start to bother you
Keep your Nice rifles for the Range

I have a very nice Parker Hale and also a sporterized 6.5x55 swede[among others],so really don't ''need'' another rifle.I was just thinking in terms of a low cost utilitarian ''project'' that would be a very effective medium range rifle for moose or bear, something that I wouldn't be afraid of carrying in the truck or canoe on lousy wet days and ruining the finish by dinging it up

Sounds like a good idea. Utility means just that. Keep it in the truck and forget about it. (well not literally).

I think it is also a good idea that once you do finish such a project, and are comfortable getting 2" groups at 100yds with that gun, you can be sure it would be a great back-up rifle on some hunts. I mean I usually drive out about 500kms from home when I go on a hunting trip and to go without a backup is kind of asking for it. I mean nothing happened yet (to my main gun) but you just never know, you could fall while hiking, bust up the glass or worse (happened to my buddy), have tree sap hit his lens while still hunting. That's just bad luck...

I think I would like to also do this kind of project. Can't beat the enfields. Decent power, good size hole, 10 rounds in the mag, what's not to like?

Well it will probably have to wait till winter.

Cheers & good luck on your project. Post some pics once your done.

Alex

2" groups would be just fine for the hunting situations I would envision-under 100 yards.Personally,I think a lot of guys discount the old 303's but their record on actual game is hard to beat- probably more moose have fallen to 303 's than any other cartridge.I'm planning my moose trip using 180 gr cling-cores, and if I do my job,I'm pretty sure the gun won't let me down

Well bud if your going to go with this then don't hold back, dive right in. Bedliner, paint the whole nine yards. And post pics. Perhaps we need a thread on the best bubba job on a 303  I'm serious :| There's lots of 303's out there that are beyond restoring to military so why not take it to the extreme

I'm considering the red dot instead of the peep sight for the simple reason my eyes don't work well on regular sights anymore.I have a nice 30/30 single shot with a peep sight that I installed a fiber optic front sight in an effort to compensate for my eyes, so that is another option.
Yes, theres a ton of bubba'd ex military weapons out there, and the fact is probably a lot more of us are shooters than collectors, and once the damage has been done, doesn't mean the rifle is any less effective, nor should it be discarded.
Besides,I like ''do it yourself '' projects-not a lot of fancy stuff or money involved, but still very functional
