I think it says "TR" but there is nothing else on the rifle that would indicate its a No4 MkI T.

No offence and also no expert here, but...I'm guessing the snipers were picked, marked & handled with a tad more forethought.
That marking looks like what happens when I drink too much coffee.

BSA Shirley M47C, yes was chosen to be a sniper. Most likley due to the war ending it was returned to general stores.

Yes selected to be a sniper is the TR wrist marking. They didn't get the T on the left receiver wall until they were finished being converted. The TR on this one was later barred out.

I'm always shocked at how poorly marked Lee Enfields are. Makes Soviet stampings look absolutely beautiful by comparison.

Rifles that tested with above average accuracy were marked TR. They were sent to H&H, but not all were needed or found suitable for conversion.

I have always been suspicious that the TR marking started as a program to pick rifles suitable as Target Rifles.

That was my guess as well. The rifle is at a local shop and is sitting in an ati sporter stock. If it had made it all the way to the "T" I would have purchased it for a project.
