What Drives .22LR Accuracy?

I've been away so I haven't checked in here. A lot things get said, some of it great, some not so much. Some demand clarity.

Did you just copy or maybe paraphrase this all from a book? It reads like you just finished a book and now figure you know all about rifle accuracy. :rolleyes: My take is that you have an inch worth of knowledge or understanding of the topic that you are spreading a mile long.
If you (or anyone for that matter) is aware of a "book" or article that covers the rimfire subject matter here, please share it. If there are such sources many readers would like to know what they are and how to get a look at them.

What appears above in this is the product of years of searching and collecting answers in print and online. The problem is that it's in bits and pieces, sometimes mixed in with good information and bad. Once collected it's a matter of reviewing and weighing them, and then figuring out what ought to be said. All this is easier said than done.

The fact the road to my range was washed out this spring and is undergoing repair has given me the desire to do something shooting-related while I wait to be able to get to there.

For someone who has posted a very long winded explanation of accuracy, you have NO CLUE what headspace is or what it means or how it may or may not affect accuracy. :rolleyes: The SAAMI headspace range for any cartridge is 0.004". If you have a rifle with ca. .044" of headspace, the thing would pull the case heads off with every shot. 🤷‍♂️

You are clearly describing the loaded length of the cartridge and the distance from the bullet ogive to the lands. That IS NOT the headspace. Headspace is the relationship between the chamber and the case, and it does not involve the bullet at all.
I'm at a loss at how to react. Perhaps you don't know your headspace. Both SAAMI and CIP call for .22LR headspace to be 0.043" at it's minimum (1.09mm for CIP). This is not controversial. I said none of my rifles have headspace less than 0.044".

As for your other remarks, they can float or sink on their own.
 
My single-shot free-pistols used to cam the cartridge in to start the bullet into the rifling - they were all pretty tight. Extracted unfired cartridges had rifling engraved on the bullets. Another consideration? Velocity and distance? "standard velocity" ammo doesn't go supersonic, and doesn't transition from supersonic to subsonic (farther away) that high velocity ammo does. as a bullet goes from supersonic to subsonic there's a bit of battering when the shock-wave collapses. More apparent with small centrefire bullets out past 700 m but I'd bet it affects rimfire, too, but at rimfire distances...
