What finish used on K31's?

I just recieved a beautiful K31 that seems to have had the wood refinished at some point.

It looks to me like they used a shellac, from the little older, reddish finish still on the gun.

Then again, I would have thought they would use oil.

Any ideas?

Walnut stocks were originally oiled, then into war years shellacked.
All beech stocks were shellacked.
During refub, all stocks were shellacked.
