What gear should be used for IPSC?

Hello all, I've tried to get a response from IPSC Canada, and from NL group, nothing, in looking to find out what I need to have, I have a 45 ACP full sized 1911, I have Jo idea what else I need, can anyone tell me?

Shoot with what you have. (Like what Innavedaw said, have at min 5 mags, pouches, holster and ammo at min)

you need a 9mm
seriously, unless you are made of money, you will find that practicing and shooting competitions with a 45 cost prohibitive. You can do it, but you'd get a lot more of it done with a 9mn, or even a 40. If you're intent on sticking with a 1911 style gun, then 9 or 40 will work great for you.
If however, you really want to stick with the 45, what you will need, regardless, is: A good quality holster, you can go full on race mode and get a Double Alpha, Alpha X holster or you can get a kydex holster like their PDR Pro II, there are a ton of other manufacturers for all the gear, CR Speed, Ghost, Black Scorpion and so on. You will absolutely need a good belt, again from DAA, CR, Ghost and so on. Mag pouches, if you stick with the 45 you will want at least 5 of them, again, all the manufacturers I listed make great pouches. A couple magnets on those pouches is also a good idea. Beyond that, good cleaning gear and solutions, I use ProShot Products for all that, but again, there are a ton of different ones. Stay away from CLPs, they suck, Clean, Lubricate, Protect, also known as Jack of all trades, Master of none. Ear and eye protection you probably already have.

You’ll need to find a Black Badge instructor and take course before competing IPSC. They are often good resource in listing gear requirements or helping find vendors.

Have you tried contacting any or all of the people here: https://www.ipscnl.ca/2014-executive-committee/. Be patient, sometimes it may take a while.

Also ask at your range, ask around, try to find members that shoot IPSC. They will know who is active, BB instructors names etc.

Most guys use the magnet to hold their stripper mag once they have topped up the gun. This is the practice of loading and chambering a round from one mag, then stick it on the magnet and insert a full mag, so you end up with 11 rounds in a 10 round mag gun (or 9 in an 8 round Classic 1911).

Magnets are also good for table starts, where you have an empty gun on a table, with all mags to be used on the table. It’s slower to fit those mags in the pouches after the beep, compared to slapping them on magnets. Not mandatory at the start of your IPSC journey, but you will most likely use them over time.

OP, you need to understand the IPSC divisions and rules before you buy a holster (and mag pouches). Don’t spend a pile of money until you have a handle on that.

Use the resources mentioned earlier, or find a buddy who shoots ipsc and pick his brain, or go to a match (even a club match). Be good practice for standing around in the rain and cold.

Great advice above with a lot of posts - my favorite was go to a local match or practice and chat with the shooters - they love showing off their kit and would be happy to help you.

I agree with everything you have said EXCEPT for the CLP.

I've been using it for 20 years on all of my pistols/revolvers (rifle too) without any issues.

Don't let anyone discourage you from shooting.45, except for potential brass availability.40 will likely only save you $30 per thousand, if you are hoping yo shoot classic major you are limited to 8 round mags so I've found the ghost triple 1911 mag pouch to be the answer. You will be able to west six mags and 2-4 magnets on two belt points. With classic magazines are the big thing that can ruin a match so do some research and don't cheap out on mags.

I'd say use you back pocket for that. Magnets are for table start.
