What glue should I use?

Hey All.

I've got a shotgun that needs a leather saddle on the comb to raise poi.

Any ideas on a glue that will keep the leather on firmly and reliably but that could be removed in future without harming the finish? The finish is some type of modern varnish, not a plastic though, I believe.

Thanks eh?

In all honesty, I would use something like wood glue. Any kind of contact cement is going to have solvents in it that will likely frag the finish on the stock. Even wood glue may cause some kind of discoloring, but its highly unlikely

I used silicone to do the same thing. Just hold your leather down with tape until it sets. It didn't hurt the finish on my O/U when I took it off. The silicone just rolled off with finger friction.

Thanks guys, some good tips here.

And, I thought of lacing it on, but I think it would be rather unsightly on this particular piece. For it to work, the piece of leather would have to be a lot bigger than I'd like. I just want it to come over the sides of the comb an inch or two.

Like the silicone idea. Also was experimenting today with a lesser gun and found that a glue stick I have around called "Uhu" brand seems to work pretty well. Perhaps a wee bit less strong than other types, but at least it washes off easily with water. If I go that route, I'll report back.

"...to raise poi..." A cheek rest will raise your head, not the POI.
"...some type of modern varnish, not a plastic..." What make of shotgun?
"...Any kind of contact cement is going to..." Yep. Once it's on it'll stay there too. Lacing is far stronger than it appears. Not shoe laces, though. Leather laces. Tie 'em on with the whole thing wet but not dripping and it'll form to the stock, but will still come off easily.

Cheek Piece

I've got one of the nylon ones and it just wouldn't say put so I used velcro strips (the kind with adhesive on the back side). Solid now, might work with leather but not sure.

going to go with the uhu stick. Seems to be just the ticket. As to raising head and poi, do the first and the second happens. Just like raising the rear sight on a rifle.

Thanks for all the input everybody.
