Right now for the purpose of hunting i have a ruger 10/22 for the real small stuff, a shot gun with various chokes, and a m14 (.308) for really large game. So
im thinking i need a gun smaller then a .308 for mid size game like coyotes and maybe some deer. My question is if you had the exact same guns and had to choose between a gun chambered in .243 or .270 which would you choose and why?

I didn't respond to the actual poll because I don't know offhand which has the less expensive ammunition. That would be my deciding factor between the two.

Personally, I hunt with a .308 and I hunt deer, moose, and elk with them. I'd shoot a coyote with it too if I saw one within range while out hunting. I don't consider buying another, different caliber firearm for shooting yotes and deer a good idea when the .308's I already own will more than nicely do the job.

If you want to buy another gun in another caliber just to own another gun, that I totally understand. But when you already own a .308, buying another caliber to hunt with makes no sense to me.

In the area i want to hunt coyote in it is illegal to shoot a coyote with a gun bigger then .275 which is why i need a smaller gun

Actually, a .270 is .277 but this doesn't seem to be an issue.
I would go with the .243 win. With light v-max bullets they are awesome.
What part of Ontario are you in?

If I were in your situation I would take both those guns off of my list and start deciding between a 22-250, 220 swift or 223. The 308 is a great deer calibre, no need to use anything different. So with that said the new gun you buy would mainly be used for yotes and other larger varmints. So I would go with a small high powered 22 cal. If you are really set on going bigger then i'd go with the 243, or even better I'd get a 25-06

If I had to choose between the two, I'd choose the 243 first - also for versatility. In your area a 243 will be great. If you ever hunt deer in a rifle area, the 243 is awesome with 100gr bullets. For me, the 243 accounts for more deer than any other cartridge. Not sure if it's a coincidence, but my 243 seems to be in my hands in the deer bush. Have carried many others but the 243 gets the deer!

The 270 is also great - get a 243 first, then when you need another rifle, get a 270.

You'll end up with both sooner or later anyway so, most importantly, have fun!

You said you will mainly be shooting 'yotes with it and maybe the occasional deer. That was what the .243 was designed for. A good varmint/deer hunter. The .270 will give more recoil and burn more powder to give you no better result. Just make sure when you're hunting deer you use a good bullet meant for deer, not a varmint bullet.

M14 for hunting? You sure like to haul weight! I have a few miltary rifles and none of them are my pick for hunting. I enjoy them at the range PERIOD.

.243 for deer and yotes. .270 for deer, yotes, moose, cariboo, bear, goats, etc.

Clearly the .270 is more versatile, particularly with handloads, but for your purposes it is hard to argue with the .243. I personally disapprove of the use of the .243 on game heavier than 100 pounds, but thats never stopped anyone from filling their freezer with it.

Between the two I'd go with the .243 it is versatile and cheap to shoot.Your .308 is a great deer caliber and a good varmint cartridge as well, personally I dont see the M14 as a hunting rifle, but that just IMHO.As others have said my first choice would be a 25cal.

Thanks for all the posts so far guys. The main reason i want a smaller gun is only because the area in which i live im not aloud to use anything bigger then a .275 for coyotes. I have to go a few hours north just to use my m14 for anything (Deer, Moose etc). This way ill have a gun bigger and smaller then .275 to cover both areas.

In that case, you best buy a .270.
