Have you wondered what happened to some of the Stg 44 after the war. They were used as props in Star Wars! I always wondered what the Rebels were using on Hoth, so I slowed down the DVD to get a better look.

They are Stg 44! Check the location of the welds and you will see what I mean.

The Stg 44 as we know it.

The Blaster Rifles from Hoth.

Wow...

Does that mean the price of star wars rifles go up now?

I wonder if they are still shootable ?! That would be funny at least.

Star wars: single handedly responsible for nerds wet dreams and milsurp collectors nightmares since... At least that one looks like they made use of existing bolt spots or pins, unlike those friggin jawa blasters/ butchered enfields.

So they are all buried in a bunker under Skywalker Ranch? That would be poetic justice in California, hotbed of the antis.

Surprising but not that surprising about the appearance of Stg44 in "Empire". Lucas has said that the newsreels from WWII were what inspired the dogfighting sequences in all of the movies.

If you watch the German film "Downfall" (Der Untergang), Stg44 are issued to a LOT of the troops in Berlin '45. They must have found quite a stash of them somewhere because there must be 100's of them.

In Downfall, it's likely only a few STG44's are real. Scenes with Whermacht running in the background with STG's are likely resin prop guns.

many were simply tosssed away on the battle fields many units were given the rifles and not much ammo why keep a rifle you cant get ammo for?

Back to reality, if I may. AFAIK Yugoslavia paratroopers had them in service for years long after WWII. Others ended up in Allies and Warshaw Pact storage IMHO, where they sit till now. As contact148 pointed out, I wonder why.

I've seen recent newsreel of Palestinian insurgents carring STGs.

I do know the Yugos and EG's definitely used them for quite some time after WW2.

It's likely other countries used them in some capacity as well, but ultimately, not THAT many were made in comparisson to other WW2 rifles. Many were probably also lost or destroyed in desperate combat in 1945.

I'll also bet Russia has many still stashed in salt mines here and there ;)
