Ok , here's the question.

The gun is a savage 24 OU 30-30 / 20 gauge.

The user is 50 and doesn't see as well as he used to ( read bifocals) .

The task is still-hunting whitetails, shooting at close quarters in the bush and overgrown cutblocks.

Sometimes they're standing unaware and sometimes they're trying to make their escape requiring a snap shot and the ability to pick up the target quickly.

What sights would you use and why?

I think that I would go with a nice set of fiber-optic open sights. Easier to pick up in low light and easier for aging eyes. Either that, or a nice holographic sight (EoTech, etc.) would do the trick for me. Both would work very well for the kind of hunting you described, with shorter ranges and possible snap shots.

Erik.

Williams peep sight with the issued apertur. Lots of field of view but still shoots precisely. Faster acquisition than open sights. And I dislike ghost-ring apertures; they are far larger than required IMHO. However, like featherweight rifles, they are quite trendy.

OK which one?

Looked on their website, seems to be a lot of models. Nothing mentioned for a savage OU. How would you narrow down which would fit that gun best ?

Don't know yet.

I just made the deal with a fellow and it's being shipped.

From the picutres it looks like a typical buckhorn type rear sight with the dovetail slot they slide into but it's hard to tell. I'll have to wait until it arrives.

I just wanted to do a little research on what's out there and what everybody likes.
