What is a "C7 type" AR upper?

C7's include a forward assist, brass deflector, and A1 carry handle and sights.

Most A1's (or SP-1's) will have the A1 sights but no brass deflector, so the C7 includes the brass deflector but still has A1 sights. Kinda the best of both worlds.

I think they went with the A1 sights for ruggedness and ease of use.

The C7 originated out of the Joint Services Small Arms Program (JSSAP) which started in 1981. The rifle Colt produce was called the M-16A1E1. It was later adopted by the US Marine Corp. in the fall of 1982. It was called the product improved (PIP) M-16A1E1 which was later called the M-16A2. Canada started the small arms replacement program (SARP) in 1983. Canada adopted the M-16A1E1 also, but just added a case deflector. The C7A1 flat version uses a weaver rail in stead of a 1913 type rail. It was developed by Richard Swan.
