Hi guys I am looking at buying a browning auto 5 in nice shape off a family friend and was wondering what a fair price for one is these days. It is an older one likely from the 60s I would guess. Any specific things I should look at when I go look at it ? Thanks.

Yes, it could be a salt gun. That was a method Browning used to cure their stocks I think roughly between 1963 and 1969. It ended up ruining many stocks over time and it also rusted the metal. Google Browning salt guns and you will get more info.

Very hard to tell without more info or pictures. Is it 12ga or smaller? Smaller usually fetch higher $ 450 sounds like a fair starting point for most that have seen a fair bit of time in the field. Guns that spent most of their days in the rack or on just the range usually also fetch more for their nicer condition.

A-5's are all over the map.
Nice ones with full rib, Twelve Light in Modified fixed choke.....$300-$500.
Sweet Sixteens are another class.
All original, no fore wood cracks, functions perfectly and such draw a nicer
return for the seller.
That sweet one I had I sold to a friend for just under $500.

What k'looky said and I'll add if you can find the brass ring instructions inside the fore wood
you might even expect to pay more ;)
The Salt wood issue was/is on the more fancier Grades of Wood.
Google Arts Gun Shop and Salt Wood, there is mega info there.
I like the Auto 5 next to the WingMasters ;)

I won't pay more than $400 for a 12ga. 2-3/4" Auto 5, and I would not pay more than $700 for a 12ga. 3". Anything else is all over the map and more up to how badly you want the gun, and how badly the seller wants the money.

Just my .02, but 2 3/4 has a low resale as does full choke. $300 to $400if in very good shape. 3" full choke -400-600. If 20ga add $100. Mod choke add $50. Check the forearm for small cracks, they were common. Good luck

I finally got a chance to get a look at the A5, friends wedding got in the way. It is a 16 gauge, in very good shape, it is a belgium marked browing A5, serial numbered around 28+++. I will have to take it apart to get a full look at it, but right now it does not look very used. Is there anywere I can verify the age and if it is collectable or not?
