What is a good cost AR setup for short-range?

I've been thinking instead of a 20" standard AR type that I would one day pick up a 14.5". I actually like the standard butt stock and don't feel the need for a telescoping stock or M4gery. If you just wanted something tough for blasting soft-point .223s for sustained fire on the 25-50 yard range, how would you economise?

I'm thinking a chrome barrel 14.5" flattop with a red dot. Guess I shoulda picked up that $1850 LE6920 when I had the chance, as it was close. But I don't need anything that fancy. Don't need to pay for a brand name. Ease of maintenance and reliablility would be key.

Edit: Hate to say it, but now that I think about it, Mini-14s are pretty short. I wonder if they might fill this role...

Mini-14's are not known for their accuracy. A short AR 14, 11, maybe even a 7.5 would be more accurate. Have you considered building a 14.5" upper to put on your A2 lower?

A no name upper A2 or A3 style 14" can be had from $400-$450 add $100 if you want a second bolt and charging handle.

The tele stocks don't add too much to the overall price, you may want to reconsider the A2 stock and upgrade right away to the M4 style.

Red dots can vary in price from $40 and way way up.

25-50 yard range, how would you economise?

If that is the range you want to shoot at, I'd go 9mm. It may run you a little more at the outset, but ammo is cheaper, especially if you handload.

The mini 14 gets a ####ty rap here, but they are dependable, reasonably in-expensive, and non-restricted.
