i am wondering what rifle out there is very accurate. i mean sniper accurate. i don't want a huge calibre rifle, but something that i can pick off a coyote at long range and still be able to use it for deer. i don't know much at all about rifles, so if someone could help me out, that would be great. i am looking for something around that $700-$800 range. thanks.

"VERY ACCURATE" comes down to the guy behind the rifle.

I couldn't agree more. You could take the most accurate rifle in the world, in a Lahiti rest under ideal conditions etc, you will get accuracy. Take into consideration all the other variables that go along with precision shooting, ammo, distance (judged correctly), elevation, angle, barometric pressure, wind, etc, if the guy behind the gun doesn't do his part, it means nothing. No different than putting a average joe driver behind the wheel of Jeff Gordon's car, could he drive the car and win the Daytona 500, I think not.

Read more bro. We're all bragging up our favourites on this forum somewhere. For example, the "what is the best non-custom 308" thread has lots of opinions. That's one thing you won't be short of on this board...opinions.

I don't own obe of those particular rifles, but a Savage withh a box magazine in .308Win will fill the bill nicely for you at a reasonable price.

I cannot with a clear concience recomend a Remignton ANYTHING anymore, after what their Rep. told Gatehouse!

Hey guys, Not a thing wrong with Remington if you understand the beast.

Rifles out of the box for hunting purposes are capable of 1.5 to 3 inch accuracy. This is more than adequate to take cloven hoof game out to 300 yards where the target is 10 inches in diameter or so. This assumes premium hunting ammo from Remington or Federal, etc.

So you realize that this phenomena of the .5 moa rifle is an abnormal situation. To get that kind of performance, you need to do a little work on your rifle, to include the following as a minimum:

1. Trigger job or Replacement of factory trigger to allow crisp 2 to 3 pound trigger pull. Replace factory firing pin, spring and shroud.

Additionally the following should be done one step at a time to incrementally improve accuracy of rifle without breaking your bank account.

2. Steel Bed Action, free float barrel. (Good point to consider aftermarket stock from McMillan, etc if you are not pleased with factory offering.)

3. True action (Blue print) to square and align mating surfaces of bolt and barrel.

4. Replace factory barrel if it doesn't perform with Lilja, Hart, etc. (This should be done if factory barrel doesn't shoot 1" at 100 or smaller after break in.)

5. Upgrade scope if required for accurate and repeatable W/E motions and parallax adjustment.

The goal is to provide at some point in this cycle a .5 moa rifle (1/2" at 100 yards five shot group.)

You can throw away everything but the action and put C$6000 in it to start with! :D

Or.... save your 6K, get some reloading gear and work it up from there.
DMCI... Dude, I get the same resuts from a stock "out of the box" 700PSS using my reloads....

Out of the box accurate = Savage 12FV or 10FP

Caliber is YOUR choice, I'd stick with 308 if there is NO restrictions on caliber in your area AND you have no use for the pelt...

Cheers

700 PSS is one of those exceptions to the rule and is in fact not intended to be sold to the general public. Many Gun Shops do when the owners are sympathetic to shooters needs for a fairly accurate rifle.

I agree with 667, I have a Rem700 PS in .223, Cost $900, and the only thing I have done is add a Nightforce scope. Using my reloads (Lapua brass, berger 73gn match BTHP) it shoots .3 inch groups at 100 yards and 1.1 inch groups at 300 yards. It took me 2 months to perfect the load. I could spend alot more on the rifle but why??

No, it was their sales manager's remark that Canada represents 4% of their market and they really don't care what happens to us. That's what's got people grumpy with them.

I don't think their rep told Gatehouse anything nor did he talk to him. From what I remember Gatehouse started a thread about some guy who apparently doesn't work at Remington anymore mentioned something to someone else yada yada yada.

Selling Guns to Canadians might be a royal SOB!

Given the relationship between Canadian governmental agencies and their US counterparts, I might get frustrated a little as a salesman too. Like the Whiskey salesman in the US during Prohibition. Not a very productive territory to say the least.
