Hey all

I am very green when it comes to anything related to smithing. Recently decided to change hand-guard on a B&T and the manual is asking to apply small film of “conservation grease” between gas block and said Handguard.

I have MilComm synthetic Grease or Aeroshell 64 at my disposal.

Illuminate me gents.

Commonly called Cosmoline.

Cosmoline is the genericized trademark for a common class of brown wax-like petroleum-based corrosion inhibitors

It can harden over time, when exposed to air but it works very well for its intended purpose.

It's available under different brand names but as guntec mentions, any good grease will do the job.

Conservation grease is an old term for cosmoline, I usually use a white grease like Lubriplate on firearms that require grease. I find that it doesn't thicken too much in the cold compared to others.

Thanks everyone, working with what I have will do the trick. The lack of info for the term "conservation" threw me off.

That's because there may have been a misprint. I believe what you are referring to is "conversation grease"; otherwise described as hard liquor. It's use makes conversation easier if less intelligible.

Came for advice, stayed for the banter. Carry on

if you are looking for easy to find rust protection grease which will stay there when warm, check for protection tape at a hydraulic stuff dealer. just rub your parts with the tape. that's what we use at sea to protect critical fitting when not available in stainless

OK, I’ll play since you got your answer. :) Don’t ban me please.

Conservation grease is the lube Liberals provide when shoving a pineapple backwards up our blip. It’s to preserve the pineapple.
