What is everyone paying for Lead/Steel shot these days?

Abman knows what he speaks of. I still reload for trap and prices have risen two or 3 times this year.

Now Canam, I must know, why are you asking and what do you have to share with us

Regards

Too much. Last bag I bought was $38.00 for a bag 24.?? pounds #4 lead. Still can't find buck shot though.

Once you go larger than #5 shot, most of the pellets are cast or swaged. More $$ and smaller bags.

With the price of factory 12Gauge loads these days ( for T&S ) it's just not economical to reload for those. For hunting loads, if you buy wisely, you can pick up really good deals and have spare cartridges for a few years. Unless you have access to low priced components ( whether for steel or lead reloads) I (personally) don't think it's worth the time and trouble anymore. For the other gauges (10,16, 20, 28, 410 ) reloading is still the game as factory loads are really over-priced in my opinion.

No it isn't. Most of the shotgunners I know who reload 12, including me, do so because we want a specific payload and/or velocity. I like fast 7/8 ounce 12 gauge loads and they aren't readily available.

I have found that buying shot from local retailers is really not economical any more, however for the reasons mentioned by Claybuster, I still load my own.

Up until recently there was an opportunity locally to obtain components, including shot from different indidual shooters as they wond down there reloading pratices and setups. For a time this source was quit steady as the price of lead and all things it is used for increased.

However, at least loacally, even this source is drying up, and the future for reloading Trap shell does not look bright.

As such, a a source for affordable shot would be greatly appreciated so I can keep feeding my addiction. :D

I am starting to think a shotmaker is the way to go. Shot is very hard to find. We need a good Canadian supplier!
We have a good Canadian supplier in Hummason's. I haven't found shot hard to find just expensive when I do.:(

Bulk lead prices are also high and getting harder to find too.

Gentlemen:

I have done some reseach, and making your own shot is somewhat more involved than you might think. Please do not be diswaded, just be infromed.

I have found and excellent thread on making your own shot, the pitfalls and challanges. If I can find it again I will post it.

Be warned, this thread is from 2003 to present, so its at least 15 pages long, but there is a tremendous amount of good information there.

I do not mean to hi-jack this thread, and if neccesary we could start a new thread.

Further, If hot linking for information purposes is not allowed PM me and I will see what I can send you.

regards and all the best

If you count the labour it takes to make shot it is going to cost over 30 or 35$ a bag, hear is abrief rundown...smelt lead into ingots....shot must drop into tank with just the right mixture of ingred. or shot won't be round.....mixture must be cooled and kept that way.....shot can only drop approx. 1/8".....empty shot....wash shot....dry shot....screen shot to remove odd sizes/shapes....tumble shot in grafite to prevent balling...package shot. Cost of machine, large h/d tumbler, screening, containers, cooling devise, etc.....easily $1000.

;) ben do you sell shot? The price I paid went up $10.00 since the last catalogue. It's a bit extreme.

I think you'll do better selling specialty shot. Buck would be good and maybe #4-5 and 8. Limit the sizes give a savings and they will come.

I don't think you'll get a dribbler to produce decent buck shot.

However, I had an idea. My guess is that Excell, Wolf, DRG, etc all use the Magma Engineering Mark 7 automatic caster. My gut says most of them are not running there machine(s) 24/7

From what I've read, the Mark 7 uses a set of 8 molds, but can run with different molds or with less than a full set.

Buying a full set of molds for buckshot would probably be too expencive. However, buying a single mold wouldn't be too much. When you also consider that the balls would not have to be run through the lube/sizer, it's a small investment. Sounds like a fine idea to keep the machines running during slower periods.
