What is happening with my M&P40?

I just finished off around my first 225 rounds and I'm noticing that all of the primer stikes have a sort of gouge leading away from them:

I stripped the pistol and also notice some wear on the edge of the firing pin hole:

I hate to ask, but is this normal? Has anyone else seen or experienced anything like this?

Yes it's normal! don't worry about it...

ps: what camera did you use?

I think the term is primer firing pin swipe.

Seen it a number of guns, especially 40's. Not a problem.

I just used my Canon S1IS, but I had a buddy hold my flashlight over the slide.

This camera does not have the macro capabilities of my old Nikon Coolpix 990. I could focus down to an objec that was basically less than 1 cm in front of the lense.

Thats interesting.I went and checked some of my own brass and found the exact same thing.Glad its not a problem,cause it does look strange.

Do M&P 40 barrels fully support its rounds, or are they like Glocks?

Are your M&P 40 cases bulged at the web more than you recall seeing on cases fired by other types of pistols?

The primer strikes sure look like cases that come out of Glocks.

I've noticed this with striker fired pistols, but my XD40 doesn't do that to the primers, nor are the cases bulged as their barrels fully support the case.

If you'd see this much of a skidmark on a 1911 ejected case, it would mean the timing is off considerably. I'm a bit puzzled why this skidmark is acceptable coming out of Glocks an M&Ps.

M&P's do fully support the case (as much as possible in a semi auto pistol) the firing pin smear is quite common in higher pressure rounds (40 and some 9mm) that's the reason there is an undercut in the breach face - it allows some flex in the pin.

My M&P9 has done the same thing right from day one. I just figured it was normal. Never even thought to ask about it.

Good question...It was time to go, and my buddies didn't want to shoot anymore?? I'm trying to make my initial supply last, until I can pick up a case of reloads. I'm happy enough that getting back into the sport was in my budget, according to my wife
