What is it called. Stock blank?

Okay I guess that answers my question as to why I can't find them.
And the reason I would want one is because stocks aren't readily available for every configuration one would want. I'm not a real amazing wood worker, I could inlet a stock but shaping one from scratch would run my patience dry.

Believe me, you got it backwards. Inletting from scratch, is way tougher than shaping the stock. I found shaping the stock relatively easy. Get a good book on stock work.

Walnut Stock Blank. This is available all over much country. I've got some from landowners with mature hardwood trees. I've cut using skill saws. Had them planed at a shop. Use a bandsaw wood blade, to rough shape. And then the rest of the story.
If buying from someone or business look for American black walnut of 2 inches or more thickness. You will want a straight grain length wise, and if lucky some burl or stripe at butt area. Right now i live in the big city, however 15 minute walk from here is a reclaimed lumber business that has large walnut blanks. Ballpark 2" x 30" x 84" $300-$400.
And yes there are businesses in the US that sell shaped rifle stocks etc too.
A good book on stock making is advisable.

You should store that wood for a couple of years at least before you shape it.
I have some that are 30yrs old, just sold a 2.5 /8/60 in walnut plank , poor grade , cheap.
There is a stock maker in Sask that will do what ever you want.
