I have an old pump action 22 in 22 short.

A Winchester Mod 90 purchased before WW1, I believe. Has a 6 digit serial number.

It has a tang peep sight and a target front sight.

It functions perfectly. I have used it a few times in our local club fun shoots where we have to shoot poker chips at 20 yards, offhand.

It has a hex barrel with good blueing. Holds a lot of 22 shorts in the mag.

Bluing on receiver is mostly gone. I assume it is a takedown, because of the thumbscrew on the receiver. It would make an excellent back pack or camp gun.

I bought this rifle from a fellow I know who is even older than me. He said it was his father's rifle. That would make it about 100 years old, or so.

What is it worth? Is takedown feature a plus or negative. Shorts only make it more rare-valuable. Tang sight?

Model 1890, the thumbscrew is on all 2nd and 3rd model 1890s nothing fancy there. The tang sight is though

I’d say $800 for a starting point

How’s the bore? Some of these use to be gallery guns for shooting games at fairs and carnivals etc, though yours looks way to good for that.

John Moses Browning strikes again. :)

I believe they were all takedowns, so no special value there, but a well preserved example with a good bore will be a moderately expensive piece, more so with a period tang and front target sight. It's a very interesting old gun.

Good score, bud.

I have mixed feeling about selling it. It is very much old world design and quality.

I used it for some fun matches because it was the most accurate rifle I had for offhand shooting at 20 yards.

When the little kids shoot in the backyard, it is a popular rifle because standard velocity shorts are not loud and it is easy to hold and manipulate for little kids. Many have difficulty with the bolt guns.

Any idea the age of a serial number around 690,000?

Sounds like you have a lot of good reasons to keep that one.
Can't add much to the value discussion but the sight alone has to be a couple hundred. Wild Bill Hickok in the antiques parts forum deals in a lot of old sights and might be able to help you with a price for the gun and sights.
