What is max powder for 308 ??

Hi. I reload 308 .i use Varget and Sierra 155G Palma HPBT.
.anyone can tell me what is Max Varget can use??
I try 45.5 GR and 46 GR for my 20" Remmy Tac.
Shooting range is 1000Y.
45.5GR i got 2710FPS. Mil Brass.
46GR is 2735 FPS. REM Brass
Both can hit the Target but more than 10 in. ( around 13 in )

So i stop @ 46GR
I hope i can got close to 2800 FPS.
Can i go 47GR.
The Hodgdon reloading Data CTR list 47GR is MAX .
Anyone try put the MAX 47GR. and shoot??
and if is safe??
 
The max loads that powder companys list are a pretty good guide line. The idea of working up is to see what your particular rifle will accept, some will show pressure signs at less than listed max loads. If your not getting any of the usual indicators at 46 try 46.5 than 47, it`s been my experience that best accuracy is below max loads. Some will suggest smaller increases to approach max load, it all comes with experience.
 
The max loads listed in the manuals are the max loads listed for the specific rifle that the load was worked up in, and with the particular lots of components that were used. Given the variances in barrels, chambers, and lots of components, that load may, or may not be safe in your rifle.
 
Military brass is heavier meaning less case capacity that say Winchester brass. I use Lapua brass with 46 gr. of Varget and find the cases to be full without compressing the powder. Velocity is right around 2940 fps with a 30" barrel.
When working up a load that is near max and a compressed load, working up in .2 gr increments would be the safest way to go.
 
Hi tyc147, getting 13" groups at 1000 yards is actually pretty good, especially if this is for five shots or more than five shots.

One of my known-good loads is 46.3 Varget with the older 155 Sierra (part number #2155 on the box) in Lapua brass (at 173 grains, it is heavier than Remington but lighter than military brass). It gives about 3025 fps from a 30" barrel, and very good accuracy at 1000 yards (good enough to win a Target Rifle match).

You might be using the newer Sierra 155 Palma bullets (part number #2156). They are quite a bit longer than the old 155s, and offer a *lot* better ballistic performance (wind drift wise, the #2155 Sierras are near the bottom of the pack and the new #2156 Sierras are near the top of the pack). I haven't spent much time doing load development with the #2156s, but I don't yet have a really accurate setup figured out.

If you aren't yet getting pressure signs with 46.0 Varget, go ahead and work up (try 46.5 and then 47.0). Especially with a factory Remington .308 chamber, which usually has very long throat, you're most likely able to work up to the max published Hodgdon loads.

For shooting at 600 yards and less, use any old brass that you have. For shooting at 1000 yards it is worthwhile to make a bit of an effort - use good brass (not military; Rem is OK, better yet is Winchester Norma and Lapua).
 
Yes. i used the Sierra 155GR Palma Match ,part number #2156.
Rifle is Remmy Tac 20 in Barrels.
and Last shoot on 1000Y is 5 shot groups and around 13 In .
and today i try shooting some 46.5GR and 47GR.
They both is good and safe and no over pressure signs.

but the grouping is open biggest that less powder what i used before.
46.5GR,i used remmy brass and got 2745 FPS. (5 shot avg.,)
47GR .i used WIN Brass and got 2768 FPS. ( 5 shot avg., )

May try 47.3 GR-47.5GR next step.
and try to got some Lapua brass.
 
As mentionned, groups that size at 1000y from a 20" factory barrel and chamber isn't something to be ashamed of.
I was pulling targets the other day while a friend tested different loads. Factory 26" Remington barrel and chamber. Tested at 300m and 500m. Winchester brass, CCI BR primers, naked 155gr. 2155 SMKs, Varget at 45.5, 46.0, 46.5, 47gr. All were sub minute, the 47gr. load shot the best, just over 4" at 500m.
We will by checking velocity this weekend.
