I know this is probably a typical newbie question but i always see threads addressing "bedding stocks", mainly to do with the M14,M305 rifles.

What is bedding a stock? Do you have to do this for all synthetic stocks, eg. sks synthetic stock?

Bedding the stock usually refers to adding an epoxy compound between certain parts of the metal and where these parts fit in the stock. Release agent is placed on the metal beforehand, so it can still be removed from the stock. There are places where this should occur and places where it shouldn't.

This can be done with any stock and in most cases if done correctly accuracy can be improved on.

ahhhhhhhhhh:)

i got a synthetic sks stock and there is some vertical play at the rear. When i apply a pressure to the trigger the gun moves vertically in the stock approx. 3-4mm.

does this stock need to be bedded or can a put a shim in there to stop vertical movement?

Sounds like a lot of play. Some stocks can be "shimmed", but its really a form of poor man's pillar bedding. For example, its common to bed CZ 452 Lux stocks with a washer under the front barrel lug. Give it an instant free float.

Rather than trying shimming, you could try the jb-weld technique used by Skullboy and Hungry. It could be adapted to bed the SKS stock at the rear. Check the stickies at the top of the forum.
