I inherited an old Remington Wingmaster 12ga. It has a 26" barrel, stamped as Full choke.
On the end of the barrel is an externally threaded attachment (see pic). There are no ports like a compensator. The internal dimension is much larger than the size of the bore. Not sure if it is original to the barrel or added after?

I have no idea what it could be for, there were some strange innovations in the 50's and 60's that never caught on and this looks like one of them.

Not likely it's still a FULL choke. Those were usually 28-30". I'd say it was cut and the device in question added.

No idea about what that is. It may be missing other pcs like a poly choke type deal.

Sure looks like a Lyman

I cleaned it up and looked really close. There is a slight seam visible at the crown which would appear that it was pressed on? I also found a faint impression of "LYMAN" stamped on it. Looks like a choke tube of some type. Not sure how it really worked being flared out.
The date code on the shotgun puts it around February of 1968.

The barrel measures 26.25" from bolt face to end of barrel. This era of shotgun came with 26" or 28" barrels. I'll try contacting Remington and see if any record show the original configuration. Doesn't make sense to put improved cylinder choke on a full choke barrel?

Never heard of (or seen) a Wingmaster with a 26" full barrel. Not that they couldn't have been made, everything is possible... But...
- it was fairly common to cut down longer barrels and install Poly chokes... To make the firearm more versatile... And in this case, if the guy was mostly hunting grouse, it would have been much cheaper than buying a shorter barrel with a I/C choke

You could always use the easy way to check for choke with a dime. In your case, it should pretty much go right in

I expect the Lyman is an aftermarket installation. Very much doubt that the barrel left Remington like that.
Being Lyman, it should be possible to find other pieces to fit the adapter. Different chokes, etc.

A dime fall through with room to spare. Also noticed on the other pic that the vent rib ends right at the support, whereas mine has a slight nub.
Hard to see how this choke is effective considering the flare in it. Time to get some shells and test the pattern.
