What is the average price for a WWII Colt 1911A1?

There was one listed on the back of a "Surplus" magazine a few years ago that came with all of the accessories and was minty for US$25,000.

Mind you, it was a rare pistol made by a rare manufacturer.

That's the problem with milsurps, you can find some real gems at yard sales and some real clunkers in specialty shops.

It's all luck of the draw, unless your willing to pay the prices asked by knowledgeable dealers and collectors.

The last time I saw one go for $50 was about 20 years ago. They were being dumped by Viet Nam and a few other Asian countries. They were in fair condition at best. The decent ones had been pretty well cherry picked by the collectors and big dealers, before the public was given a chance at them.

Quality original examples are getting harder to find and when listed for sale they typically sell fast. Most of the decent original Colt M1911A1's I have seen sold on in the past couple years have been between $1200 to $2000. I have also seen some really bad not original Colts being offered for over $2000 !!

I would suggest doing significant homework before buying. The more you know about these pistols, the easier you'll be able to tell if you're getting a fair deal.

Good luck!

Wonder what the very good condition USS (Union Switch & Signal) went for up at Simpson's Auction yesterday?

I wanted it sooooo badly, but I am in way over my head as it is...

The last dealer that had them in large numbers was Lever Arms and they came from Cuba. That was some time ago.
