what is the best 308 non custom rifle??

Max, should have said 10FV. The HS and McM stocks are nice but I see no real benefit over a good contour varmint stock for all the shooting I am going to do. The orig stock can also be used very effectively if the barrel channel is opened way up and the action properly bedded in it.

Just do a search for the Savage forum and you will see all sorts of mods that can easily be done. The rifle can be completely taken apart with only a few tools so make changing anything very easy. Big bonus is that most items have the same sizing and thread pattern for decades so you can mix and match (properly of course) from a variety of rifles.

At present, I am using a bolt from one action to work with another rifle. I have swapped triggers and barrels. Stocks of course are easily changed.

Non Custom Rifle

I have a Steyr SSG 69 P and it shoots great but it was in the high end price range when they came into the country. But the Savage system is the best bang for the buck. Will the older Savage 110's take any of the upgrades like the newer triggers, or are they a totally new system?
Thanks

Albayo, most rifles even from 20yrs ago should work. But best to check with the accessories manf if you have a real oldie. There were some visually different trigger groups when Savage actions for CIL. That's is way back when.

For everything that I have seen, parts fit. There is another area of difference and that is in the firing pin size and larger thread pattern (RUM/WSM actions mostly). Again, check with the accessories you want to swap.

By 2001 ALL Savage rifles have the large cross pin/small firing pin bolts.
Savage threw another wrench in the works with another action length in 2006. All their NEW STOCK detatchable mag stocked short actions are now about 1/8" longer between the screws due to the design of the detatchable mag. The front action screw was moved forwards.
Accutrigger mechanisms will not fit on non-accutrigger actions and vise versa.
Stocks for Stevens/Savage/Accutrigger will fit each other with only a slight relief cut for the accutrigger. You still need to check action screw spacing and barrel channel size.
Bolt bodys and bolt heads can be different lengths. Again you need to do a quick measure to be sure.
Basically no gunsmithing tools are required to swap Savage parts besides a barrel nut wrench.

NEVER SAY DEFINATELY with a Savage, you need to measure. Savage doesn't waste too much and they seem to pass the savings along to the consumer.

Cheers

Back to original question, the best non-custom that can be bought off the shelf has to be the TRG, the Tikka, Steyr, et al are in a similar class.

The Accu-teigger is a sheet metal safety trigger that does not break as cleanly or consistently as the triggers in any of these quality rifles.

How about the McMillan built Tubb 200 rifle
TUBB2000T.jpg

They are tack Drivers:D

TRG22
Blaser LRS2 LE
Swiss Arms SHR970
Unique Alpine

ALL of these KICK the savage rifle line ups ass. Althought they are all far more money!

Hitzy most of those rifles are in excess of 5000.00 the exception is the TRG 22
I agree with Savage here too...Can't go wrong with the Savage 10FP series, all under $1000. Even the the 700P is now over that price bare-ass.
