i was wondering this, i dont like having too many hunting rifles i am a firm beliver in that knowing a few realy good is key to clean kills and ability to make long shots, i have a CZ 3006 and a tikka 7mm rem mag but want a backup rifle that would suplement either one for example i will use my tikka in open plains and i will use my cz 30-06 in close country

one sugestion i thought of is maybe a browning BLR in 308 with a fixed 6 power what do you fellas think?

A beat up SMLE rides with me as back up for whatever I may be carrying. Let the flak fly: I'll leave the better stuff in the vehicle if the day is nasty or area rough, and bring out the .303. I'd rather know if I'm going down, I'm not bringing a scope with me.

not a bad idea maybe a lyman peep sight might be good on a BLR

For me Savage 99c 308. Tons lighter than my 30-06 and has a clip.
Very nice little gun. May end up using it more than the -06. The 30-30 Winchester 94 or a Marlin would work too or an old 303 even-an old military
rifle if you can find a good one cheap. The 308 works better for me than the 30-30 cuz you never know what you need to whack in the BC bush. Lotsa possibilities. The 99 is a nice short light rifle.

Your two rifles now are very similar, in fact I think the 7 mm mag gives you very little over the 30-06. I would look for something a little different. If your bigger rifle is going to be to 7mm, then sell teh 30-06 and get something like a 260 or 7-08 in a real lightweight. The other way to go would be something like a 45-70.

my 30-06 is kind of unique and i am in love with both my guns and couldnt sell either one to many memories of hunting trips long gone bye, my CZ 30-06 is tailord for the bush it only has a 18 inch barrel with full wood stock and a high mounted scope with see through rings allowing use of the iron sights and for a scope it has a leupold vx2 1-4 variable with a german no-1 reticle single post and so i think it is fairley differnt then my 7mm rem mag with the 22 inch barrel and a 4-12 variable scope

i happen to like them now fellas ,fellas i want to keep the 2 that i have i have used them in different configurations and found what i like best, thanks for all the advise but i realy like what i got and am interested in a backup rifle or suplemental rifle that may not be realy good as a bush gun or a plains gun but does both reasonably well

BLR 308 as a backup rifle?

As a backup rifle?

Whatever you have on hand, your 30-06 will do the job for the 7MMRM and vice-versa, I see no needs for another one, but if you insist, your thoughts concerning a browning BLR in 308win will do the job just fine :D, that's what I use for deer hunting (Savage in .308win), or go with something completely different, like a 45-70, which I use as my backup rifle for Moose hunting and my prefered one for bear hunting, not that I need all that power but.....:D hey, why not?

Good luck.

the other reason i want the 3rd is for lending out to guest hunters i dont like people nicking up my 2 babies and just in case my scope went down or have something break plus i just want another gun in the collection just a need you know we all have it

My Remington 700 30-06 is my go to rifle and my back up rifle. In thirty-some years of carrying it in the truck and packing it in the bush it has never let me down, touch wood.

i think the older remingtons are nice your lucky to have one i have personaly seen many flaws in recent remingtons maybe just bad luck so i kind of avoid them like the plague allthough i am sure there is many happy remington fans out there i kind of like the look of the 700 bdl my father only used browning, weatherby, husqavarna, and he had a few winchester;s and a couple smith pistols

The "Jungle Carbine" has been my "come along truck gun" for years. Always depenable when needed. Had a special leather pouch made for the clip last year, and are planning to remove the "Red Dot" sight for this season, and go back to the original rear open sight again. Like the "Ramline" stock on this fine gun. The best "backup gun" ever designed ?

Personally when I go for a "backup" gun I get exactly the same gun/scope/calibre configuration so it's a true backup and the user has to make no changes when switching to the backup, and all the experience that the shooter has with the original gun can instantly be transferred to the backup. Same ammo, everthing. If you're actually going for an "alternate" gun then I'd go as different as possible, say a Marlin 45-70 lever action, or a Norinco M14S.

Let me see if I understand this. A primary rifle of good quality is backed up by a crappy ####ty old cheap rifle just in case the good quality rifle fails. Or is it to back it up just in case you fall into a gorge and the primary rifle breaks? In which case the ####ty old crappy rifle comes out. If a hunt is that far away from home and the primary rifle either fails or gets damaged, does it not make sense to continue the hunt with something of equal quality? Just my way of thinking/ :)

As far as lending a rifle to a guest hunter, well if he showed up without a rifle to com'a huntin' , then what the heck was he to begin with????
