I would like to know what the best head space for a M14 to be able to shoot both 308 factory loads and 7.62 surplus while maintaining the tightest chamber possible.

Ya, I read it but Lazerus2000 it didn't make any sense to me. That's why I was asking for people's opinion. According to the stickies .006 over 308 is the beginning of 7.62 but this is no go for 308 and if you have one @ .005 over 308 for 7.62 surplus rounds, according to the sticky. So I was just wondering what the guru's like you, Savage, 45ACPKING and Hungry thought the best chambering for both factory & surplus or is it that you can only have one and not the other?

Ok fine,
executive summary:

M14 rifles built for TARGET use only,
that will be cleaned regularly,
and using ONLY .308 Winchester ammo,
I set the headspace at .308 GO.

If I want to shoot 7.62 NATO ball out of that rifle,
I set headspace at .308 GO PLUS .002".

Remember, these specs are for a rifle that will be cleaned regularly.

7.62 NATO GO is already .005" longer than what SAMMI calls TOO LONG for new .308 rifles, and this extra length is to provide extra reliablity in the field for dirty military guns, etc.
OK Fine???
