i have an AR lower that has a logo engraved into it. i want to get rid of it and have my own engraved. is heli-arc or tig the only way to have it done? isn't there an epoxy that can work?

Don't do it. Unless you can keep the temp below the annealing point for the metal you will destroy the temper of the steel. If you don't know what the annealing point is, I recommend you find out and get a few temp sticks and then find a very good welder or plumber, or better yet, take it to a gunsmith.

engrave

take a skim cut and engrave what u want should only be .0075 deep and it's on the mag area (that is probably a flat) so the strength won't matter make sure the set up is good with a dial (flat on x and y axis) so u take off as little as possible, the machinist can re-engrave in the same set up so the new engraving is even (assuming that u are doing this in a cnc), use a small cutter and clamping force can be minor and little distortion for the surfacing, clean the whole thing with oven cleaner (to remove annodizing) then sent it off to the annodizer and there u go u can have "killer pimp" engraved on your ar

good luck

this is how we do it in the toolroom

A similar question. What would be the easiest way of removing those ugly "driver license numbers and social insurance numbers" etched on so many guns?

Do you think turning down those wonderfully tacky Bisley engraving would affect the strength of the cylinder? They're really nothing more than deep scratch marks.

Might be possible to spin the cylinder on a lathe and polish out the engravings. You want to keep the surface true and remove as lttle steel as possible.
