I've got one of these things and just love it! (Didn't think it's worth that much $$$ though...) It's not 'really' settled as to what it is. Is it a rifle? Is it a handgun? I USE mine as a handgun. As in: it actually shoots really accurately and I use it one-handed in bullseye pistol matches. Okay, not as great as my Walther GSP in .32 S&W, BUT the consternation and discussion it provokes is worth it!
The very first time I went to fire it, I thought "Oh, I must have 20 rd mags pinned to 10", but the .380 ACP ammo stopped going in at 5 rds. Which made me swear a bit. The FRT calls it "Commercial Version" instead of 'Handgun' or 'Rifle'. To my mind its a semi-auto version of a "machine pistol" and I'd argue that it's 'designed to be aimed & fired by the action of one hand' despite the dinky little wire stock. After all, originally Lugers, Mauser Broomhandles and Hi-Powers and probably some others were designed to be capable of being used with stocks too.
I took it to a "Military firearm" match in the fall. First I shot it in the pistol category course of fire on the handgun range (without the shoulder stock). Then just for fun I asked on the 100yd rifle range if I could shoot it (with the shoulder stock) in the rifle category. Unfortunately I was told that club wasn't allowed to shoot handguns on the 100yd rifle range.
So there you have it. It's odd little number that's Restricted. What it is depends on who you ask.
So really, you guys would pay over $1400 for one? Man that's pretty tempting, but I really love this thing. It shoots SO well.
