What is the difference between Browning X bolt and A bolt

to me there totally different different stocks, xbolt uses 4 screws per scope base vrs 2 on the abolt. xbolt has a drop out mag the abolt a hinged floor plate with removable mag. i prefer the older abolts. not keen on the new look. acuracy wise probably the same. browning has been known to produce good shooter.

X-bolt comes with a soft recoil pad. The A-bolt has the hockey puck.

The mag configurations are different. I don't have any problem with them.

They are both accurate rifles. Unless you have to have the walnut stock I suggest to stay away from the glossy version. They are very easily scratched on outdoor trips.

If you are looking at the Browning you should also check out the Tikka.

The AbortII has a non rotating bolt shroud and a stupid little wheel on the cocking piece + many small pot metal parts.
The magazine was hard to lose in the snow and mine was real accurate.
<That's it in the picture.

The Xbolt has an easier to lose mag ,no retarded shroud or wheel and a button that lets you open the bolt when the safety's on.
The trigger is better and they have replaced some pot metal with plastic.

I have owned a few A-bolts. A 7mm rem mag with boss. A 22-250 varmint stalker woth medium heavy barrel, and another 7mm rem mag without the boss system.
I really liked the A-bolts and thought they were a quality product.

The X-bolt might very well be a great gun...but new and improved and the addition of plactic parts do not go well together in my opinion.

It seems that a LOT of newer ang lighter models of guns..feature more and more plastic parts. It makes me wonder if cost savings and profit margins are behinde some of the latest offerings.

A-bolt = no plastic parts.

I can only imagine what the new A-bolt 3 will look and feel like

I like the Abolt, but don't love it. Shorter length of pull it seems. Kikeez pad certainly helped recoil on the 300wsm over the standard pad..

magazine is a good thing imo.
weight is good
barrel length is good
overall its good.

try before you buy.

Have an A-bolt for years that has the hinged floorplate w removable mag. 300 WM. Very accurate shooter & enough weight & stock design to handle 300 recoil. Hunting buddy bought the same caliber in X-bolt; gun is lighter yes but kicks like a mule. He has ordered a Sako

Four screws per base? I've taken a hard fall on loose scree in the mountains with all my bodyweight right on my scope and never hurt a two-screw base.
Talk about a solution to a problem nobody had.
