What is the difference between Skeet, Trap and Sporting Clay?

Kind of viewed them as different ways to say the same thing. But after looking at clay throwers they seem to be different. What is the difference?

Thanks.

The explanation is easier with pictures.

Sporting Clays doesn't have a set lay-out. Consider it like golf. Different stations with different presentations. No two courses are alike.

Another game is "Five Stand" which is five stations like trap but with a variety of sporting clay-type target presentations.

Trap is much like a pheasant flushing,

Skeet offers targets close to alot of general bird hunting situations,

Sporting clay targets are only limited by the degree of sadomachism of the course designer.

Trap is shot at 16 yards for the house with 5 shots at each station, the trap also oscillates, so you are not sure where it is going to come out as far as direction goes.
Skeet , as you can see, is hot from 8 different stations, with the traps on a set direction.
a single high and a single low are shot from each station, plus doubles form stations 1,2, 6,and seven.
You first bird missed is re-shot as an option .

These guys have pretty much nailed it.
Only other significant factor is in trap you can shoot 16 yd singles, 16 yd doubles, and handicap as far back as 27 yd. And the bird is always going away from you so a mod, IM or Full choke is best. 30 or 32, 34 inch barrels are best. As single shot is fine except of course for doubles
On skeet your birds are going away, approaching, and crossing, so a open choke, SK, Cyl etc and shorter barrel like 26inch is best. And a O/U is preferred to semi.
On Sporting clays the layout could be anything, so a double barrel with several chokes works best.

Shoot them all and see which you like best. I like them all and have shot all with my 870. It's not the best gun for any of them, but it works for all of them. it's alot of fun!

I thought you were referring to the differences in the trap machines themselves.
Skeet and trap machines have solenoid releases for instant pulls. Trap machines (ATA) also have random oscilators. Sporting machines don't normally have a solenoid release, as instant release is not so important. Also sporting machines tend to have a lot of vertical adjustment and often tilt as well. Some newer trap and skeet machines also have some tilt adjustment to take the "curl" out of the targets.
