what is the flattest shooting cartridge?

British 14" naval guns fired "bullets" that weighed 1920 pounds from barrels 42 calibers in length at a sedate 2575 fps, yet they had a range of up to 44,150 yards when fired from coastal batteries. A .303 fires a 180 gr bullet at a similar velocity, yet the effective range is only 1000 yards.

1920 pounds, what were they shooting pickup trucks? :)

Your right it does depend on the ballistics aswell but no matter the bullet weight they both drop at the same speed, its just the faster goes further during the drop.

Just check out the max point blank range I know some of you aren't Chuck Hawkes fans but...http://www.chuckhawks.com/rifle_trajectory_table.htm

300 weatherby looks to rule on his chart but sure there are many new cartridges missing from the list.

i wouldn't take that chart as gospel truth , just a quick glance i can can see enough minor errors in it to make nothing more than a rough approximation of what each cartridge can do .

257 Wby is not far behind for point blank range.old Roy may have known a few things about building a cartridge:D

There was a 375 HH necked down to 22 or 23 caliber to study throat erosion. It obviously wasn't factory and may not be the flattest but it was probably pretty flat shooting if the bullets held together.
