what is the most "potent" 22lr cartridge?

I guess it should be really two questions

- what is the fastest catridge?

-which cartridge gives most kinetic energy?

- penetration? I mean, some light bullets seem to carry quite a bit of energy but I know heavier bullet will penetrate better, if we are talking small game hunting. So, what 40 grain bullet cartridge carries highest kinetic energy as well?

Well its more like three questions now :)

I tried CCI Velocitor and really like it. But is there anything that carries more energy with better or at least similar trajectory?

The remmington yellow jacket/Viper seem to have alot of snap...they are 1500 fps muzzle,1075fps@100 yeards

I like both the yellow jackets and velocitors --I don't have stats on them but they do work for me and have a "good" snap to them

Winchester Powerpoints are in my opinion the most potent 22LR cartridge available. Heavy, fast and a big hollow point. It is a very accurate round also.

Oh, and if you want a heavier bullet the 60 grain Aguila SSS are also out there, but this extra weight does reduce velocity to a subsonic level.

the fastest is the aguila - I believe hypermaximum velocity - comes both in SP and HP - I think 32 gr. They aboth have a normal body - unlike the Stinger and they're not bad - accuracy wise - again unlike Stinger who gets flyers in all rifles I've seen.

The best penetration/ power would be Aguila again - 60 gr SSS. They advertise it to penetrate 24" @200 yds. If that is true or not, I do not know if that is accurate because even though I still have a few rounds left (and more to come, I hope) , I do not have the ballistic gellatine.

I think the slower twist rate is better for the heavier bullets. For example a 1:9 twist barrel might shoot the 60grn better than the standard 1:14

I believe 1:9 is usually described as faster than 1:14 and yes 60 grain SSS will keyhole if you do not use a barrel with a fast twist rate. This is due to the length of the bullet rather than its mass. The extra mass of the bullet on SSS does not make up for the very low velocity, the bullet has relatively low energy. I can only guess about penetration. Lower velocity projeciles often penetrate better than higher velocity projectiles as they do not transfer their energy to the target as quickly. All other things being equal a projectile with greater mass will penetrate more.

i have put most of the the main group of fast 22s across the chrony.out of a 20inch 10-22 the velocitors come in at advertised veloicity ave 1434fps in my buddys mod 75 win the vel was over 1500.yellow jackets came in around 1400 and stingers went as high as 1615 but would average around 1580.win powerpoints ave around 1250 but are consistently the most accurate (my findings) with the velocitors coming in second the stingers suck for accuracy i have found.my 22 bbl 10-22 hunting rig is sighted in with velocitors and prints 3/4 at 50 rapid fire all day.

Having put many a rimfire round across a chrony, I found that the Yellow Jackets never lived up to the hype. My average for 25 rounds was 1316fps. Not even close to the published 1500. Velocitors were as advertised and stingers were close as well.

I read a report once that the stinger loses alot of its velocity and "Whump" factor by 100 yards.

In my experience I have to go with Winchester Power Points as the most potent round. I mean look at the size of that hollow point. I have a fiew recoverd rounds from 25, 50, 75 and 100 yards and they mushroomed perfectly at all distances. Good bullet integrety. They are also half the price of most of the bullets mentioned.

I have yet to put the Velocitors through their paces. Accuracy from my 541 HB has been good.

For a great shooting gopher round I have settled on win power points. Its cool to see them being shredded by yellow jackets though. I find the velocitators lacking in expansion on these little things.... they would penatrate verry well I asume, with better preformance than a round nose solid.

Winchester made a nice bullet about 5-6 years ago called the Winchester Super Silhouette I belive it was 42grn cone shaped flat point and had more energy at 100 yards than a stinger.I wish they still made them!

I had the pleasant experience to have the 60 grainers stabilize in slower bbls. Ideal would be the 1:9 for that particular round, but it was mostly manufactured for the Israelis..... but they also had sound supressors which usually ad to that flight stability issue.

I'l run a comparrison test soon , weather permitting, but the bal. gellatine test will have to wait until I get enough pig feet :p

most potent?

The most potent round you can use is the one any particular rifle or barrel shoots well. For me it doesn't matter how fast a certain round is if I cannot hit anything with it. I have lots of .22's and whichever ammo I take on any given day depends on the gun I take. I have a 10/22 that I bought a seconds GM 18" fluted bull barrel for and that barrel shoots winchester experts better than any gun I have ever seen. I have several others that like american eagle, and one that likes yellowjackets. Whatever your gun shoots well, buy that and use it, practice your shooting so that you just don't hit varmints, but hit them where you want to hit them. I practice a lot, and when I go shooting gophers, I aim for the front shoulder, it usually drops them where they sit. Later, Mark.
