The original Finish was painted with suncorite

You can try semi-gloss Bar-B-Que paint or automotive muffler paint.
Now a disgusting story about that. I once had a co-worker ask me to find a No4 rifle. I found one for him with a few minor scratches on the paint, and loaned him a can of touch up paint for the finish. The bugger took a WIRE WHEEL to the original finish and stripped it all off! He then Used my ENTIRE can of spray paint on the rifle and to add insult to injury, put a scope on it!

What John Sukey said is as close you can get without actually finding some suncorite. I've done the same but put some pure linseed oil on it to give it some resistance to cleaning.

Suncorite is VERY hard to remove.

I wonder if warming the metal first would make it a harder finish. I know with our mod sleds we would do that to new pipes, heat them up then spray them so it 'baked' on. I have an NRF SMLE here I'm restoring, FTR in '53 so its suncorited, that I'm going to touch up with John Deere muffler paint, it's good stuff!
