What is this 7.62 ammunition?

My neighbour has emptied out his house prior to moving and found some 7.62x51 hard point ammo he'd had around. Gave it to me, 10 cartridges in two 5-round clips.

He already gave me three boxes of 308 hunting ammo.

It is marked 7.62 AB1 R1M1

Any idea what these are?

From where?

Safe?

It is actually marked "A 81", and was made in South Africa, in 1981. It is standard ball ammo, and would be perfectly safe in any 7.62x51 or .308 firearm.
