Any thoughts as to what this is?

Some sort of optical device with a red lens. Signaling device, infrared?

it looks like a signal device similar to an aldis lamp ........possibly infra red

There might be a potential radiation risk (radium 226 )

I would give the guy at this thread a call ......seems in the know, you are probably ok but i would make sure anyway what you don't know about radiation can make parts fall off :D

no NS I think this mght be ww2 vintage what got me thinking IR was that was the color lenses of Vintage IR stuff .......

and its light portable and rugged enough for an advance beach recce party to signal in advance of a landing for example

this is speculation BTW and i do think that link i gave above is a good lead

OK, checked it with a geiger. It's hot.

Giving off about 0.5 - 0.7 mr/hr at 2 inches. 1.5 mr/hr direct contact.

Don't know whether that's dangerous or not, but it's been moved to the shed now.

Wrap your Balls with a roll of tin foil, shiney side out, before going back into the shed. That Instrument was at Hiroshima :eek:
