What is this stuff on the shotgun shell?

Hi,

I have waterfowl shotgun shell box (Remington) stored since 5 or 6 years ago, opened the box and found almost all the shells in it with a wax or glue like substance on the top. Here is a photo of one of the shells.

Is it leaking anything? And are they safe?

If it is glue from inside the shell, it does not affect the pellets and the powder? I suppose it is the glue to attach the metal part to the plastic?

It's not leaking from the inside. It is likely put there on purpose to prevent water from getting in through the crimp.

Ah ok thanks. I have a very tiny memory and I don't know if it was like that when I got them... I have another box, a Winchester though, but it does not have that substance.

Steel shot turns into a slug if it gets wet/rusts. They have to seal the crimp with something to prevent that. Probably just wax.
