I haven't played with my SKS in two months and the last time I used it, I cleaned it very well. Surprise surprise when I opened the bolt tonight, I found a yellowish powder around the chamber. Is it corrosion and how can I get rid of it?

It's nuclear waste from Chernobyl and you just scrub it as you would normally clean the rifle I guess. Picture isn't the greatest so I don't know is it corrosion?

Sulfer will do that if left sitting on something.......

Depending on how humid the enviroment is, it could do that in 1 week to 3 or 4 months.

But it seems to me that is an odd place for sulfer to 'collect'......

Mold of some sort?

Let's get serious here! It's obviously a chemical reaction where something either leached out of the metal or out from where the barrel screws into the receiver. Should I just wash it with boiling water and hope for the best? I will turn ON a dehumidifier tonight.

I think it is a reaction to corrosive ammo, it will get into your action, trigger group, anywhere there is an opening for the smoke/ash to go.

Ben has been smoking cigars around your SKS when you were out at work. "Lets get serious here" - I don't think that's possible in this dimension.

The only thing I have seen that resembled that was borax glass weeping from the rear sight base of my Remington 870 Express barrel. It is a by product of hard soldering the rear sight base on the barrel. It should have been cleaned off, but someone at Remington thought it was good to paint right over the borax glass. I kept wiping it off and it finally disappeared. I have no idear what that crud is on your SKS, honest! :D

I am still 100% convinced that this is a one of a kind french SKS rifle...

just look at the Brie cheese mold, nuff said!

mabbe some yellow cake from homemade depleted urianium boolets

err.. just kiddin

if its sulphur, it'll give off the typical smell of sulphur if you sniff

i'd definitely remove it and rinse with something basic (just incase its acidic )

as well as pull apart any place where the combustion gases may have gone
