Based on my expertise, it is a Number 11, MK14......

Honestly - I am lost when it comes to these, with their different versions. I need to source a magazine for it. So far I have purchased a #4, MK1 and a #1, MK3 magazine at the advice of others. Neither have worked.

I know that it is ideal to have the original mag as these were not meant to be removed (rather loaded) but I'm not confident I'll be able to find the magazine in time....so I'm looking to source one (3rd party, used, whatever.)

It's my dad's gun and I would very much like to use it this deer season.

Its a no1 mk3 (smle) (shtle) all the same yet different. But a no1 magazine should work for you, could be a little sticky as the rifle and magazine have two different 100 year history’s behind them.
 
It's a nicely sporterized No1 MkIII so a No1 magazine should work. These mags often need a a good whack on the bottom to seat properly. If neither mag you have fits properly, you may have a mechanical problem with the mag release and may have to have a gunsmith have a look at it.
 
In our family's assortment of No. 1's and No. 4's often end up with the feed lips bent over from "banging" them into place when tipped or crooked - won't hold or feed correctly then - the lips sometimes need to be "tweeted" (bent in or out) to properly hold and feed cartridges. Often also needed to do when changing from pointy (like Military FMJ) to commercial Round Nose (like Win 180 grain). A No. 1 and a No. 4 magazine are different - but with file and determination can be "made" to work, sort of.
 
The magazines on the Lee Enfields were never meant to be removed - charger fed was the way to go. With that in mind, the magazines were fitted to each rifle to ensure proper feeding.

As stated above yours may need to be adjusted slightly. Remember, small changes and test for function each time.
 
I have 16 Lee-Enfield rifles. 3 the magazines are serial numbered to the rifle. I sat down one night and fixed my sticky mags, now they all slide in and out perfect. I started swapping mags out. Try a different mag. I rebuild Enfield rifles and found a lot of times it was the trigger guard that was the problem, too tight. I have extra parts and mags so fairly easy to find something to work.
You have a no. 1 as others have stated. Some mags fit better than others. I have three extre mags that fit all of my rifles, hasn’t failed. Both no. 1 and no. 4. I don’t know who made them. No name or stamps on them. Same finish and identical besides for wear. I would like to find some more.

This is a No 4 or No 5 mag. Not the same. the grooves down the side do not go all the way down and it will not fit well in a No 1MkIII* rifle (slight shape changes to make it faster to make)

This looks very much like the "ProMag" replacement magazine that I had the opportunity to try.

No Bueno.

The feed lips end seems to be just a bit too wide to fit....not sure how much force I am willing to use. I've dealt with tight mags before but this doesnt seem to want to work.
 
Seems there are two types of pro mag


1) This has two latch grooves..

2) This one is a sheet metal cut out notch.

The geometry of the lips on both of those look wrong, maybe it's because they have a removable floor plate, but they don't really look like they'd feed without a lot of work. I have a No4 and a No5 and both mags are serialled to the guns.

You can also look for a 5 round magazine. Better profile and I think they look great on a sporterized Enfield.

He's passed on - so I am not 100% sure.

I do however, know that it is in the house. Just not sure where. I was looking for an interim solution, hoping to snag a deer with his old rifle this year...
 
a new mag will require fitting and tweeking of the mag feed lips to work optimally, any No1 mag should work with minimal problems but slightly bending the feed lips will make a big difference.
