As we know brass is...."hard to get" these days. Has anyone seen any .300 WM lately? I haven't seen any in ages. So I thought maybe a .300 WSM may be the route to go. Brass? Almost impossible to find. Except for Nosler and Norma...but +$4/shell is crazy! Why is .300 WSM brass so expensive? Heck, .338 Lapua brass is cheaper!

The major US ammo brands have decided that selling components doesn't make as much money as selling factory ammo.. AND the US hunter seems well prepared to buy instead of reloading.

So the options for brass supply have shrunk. 300WM brass is available.. I might have some left???

Norma and Nosler and Hornady and PRVI are filling in the voids left. PRVI is my goto if available. Norma is left kidney expensive as is Nosler but I feel Norma is the best out of the box quality right now. Hrn is not trying to make tough brass as they don't want you to load a case many times.

So, this is changing the "right" chambering for reloaders. Short magnums prices have jumped up with limited options... many are now discontinued.

The good old belted magnums are the most affordable for the case volume... but demand is now making it hard to get. But if you don't mind booking the backorders, you will get brass.

For value and decent case volume, I really like the 30-06 family of cases for long action builds. Supply is usually better and costs are way down.

What is the wait like for .300 WM and what make? The only belted mag I see regularly at a "reasonable" price is W-W 7mm RM. I've got plenty of that kicking around. You are right about .30-06 though - I just bought a box of Lapua and it seems downright cheap now! I also get what you are saying about these changes affecting what is the "right" chambering for a new rifle.

I don't see Lapua or Norma being expensive relatively speaking. Once you factor in number of reloads, not having to cull too many, it's basically ready to load... It is decent value for the money. I still believe Winchester is the best bang for the buck though.

In Norma .300 WSM brass is more expensive than .404 Jeffery brass. And about 2x the price of .300 Wby. Seems disproportionate.

If you ever come across 325 wsm, that works well, I had the same trouble a while back so just bought a bunch of that and necked it down and it works fine.

I absolutely agree, and this is the thing that is so frustrating for us. I guess it's a supply and demand thing.
Good thing I have a lifetime supply of both 7WSM and 300WSM, LOL.

If you can't find brass at less than $ 4 a case perhaps you should shop for some loaded ammo. I'm looking in the LeBaron catalog (also online) and they have Win Power Max ammo on sale for $ 28/box of 20. With tax that will be about $ 1.50 case. They also have Win Super X @ $ 38 /box. The premium bullets are in the $ 40 and $ 50/box range but that is still cheaper than $ 4 /case. Check Walmart and some other chain stores for clearance prices. Also check out a few gun shows. The last couple I've been at had lots of 1-fired brass.
