What is used on the wood of a Pre 64 win 94?

Anybody know what the wood on a pre 64 Winchester 94 was finished with.

I was told shellac with a stain. May be incorrect but that is what I was told by a smith when I was a youngster

I wonder if it’s semi gloss or matte?

Winchester probably bought it in 45 gallon drums...

A very similar look and is waterproof can be done with Varathane #66 oil finish.

I have used minwax polyurethane clear satin and have good results with colour and finish. It is a clear stain. Light coats 4 or 5 usually does it. The colour match is very good. Inexpensive easy to use product blends well with exiting finish for patch work . A Rona product as well.

My stock making instructor told me about the Varathane #66 oil finish in 1967... his favourite finish.

I would talk to them, I know he has videos on matching different Winchester finishes with his product.

I’ll more than likely try a couple types,see what I like best.
I’d like to keep it as original as possible.

I just read on another forum, by a particular poster, that the formulation of Varathane #66 was altered in 1984 - apparently when new "regulations" kicked in. Have you noticed a difference in the product, since then??

If you have a 1950's 94 with the finish kind of flaking off as in there are some more glossy sections and dry sections (finish loss in small elongated pattern), is it okay to use a BLO or Tung oil now and again to keep the stock protected?

Don't want to ruin the original finish but it needs some love. It would be nice to refinish the stock but the rifle is all original and I want to keep that.
