Good day folks!

Looking at buying a Savage 93R17 TRR rifle. Want to use it as a trainer/precision plinker. I started thinking about what kind of glass to put on it to fit this use without breaking the bank. Kinda of want a "tactical" style scope, but nothing super high end.

Let me know what your favorite scopes are!

Thanks!

Vortex Viper LR 4-16x44 Dead hold BDC reticle with the elevation turret.

Not an a 17 but on my .22 TRR SR I'm using a Bushnell 6500 4.5-30x50 Tactical, with mildot. It's mounted on a 20moa EGW with Burris Zee rings using 10moa inserts. I can zero at 50 and have enough elevation to shoot in to space. :)
I use the rifle as a trainer for my big boy guns.

I have a Hawke Varmint 2.5-10X44SF on my CZ 452 in .17HMR. I like the scope but wish I opted for a bit more magnification since the .17HMR is so capable. The 1/2mil-dot does help for longer shots.

just to remind you that 50 rounds of 17hmr cost 15$ at least. That's more than it costs me to reload 223.
I don't see a 17 hmr as a cheap trainer.... I would get a .22 or a 223, unless you use it to hunt small game and you legally need a rimfire( I do, and I have a 17 hmr for that).

maybe get a bushnell tactical 5-15 mildot? 450$
probably going to end up on my .22 savage mark 2 TR if I get one.

Unless I'm super rich, I don't want to spend 1000$ on a .22 scope, really.

17 is a great trainer, no recoil little noise and relatively flat out to 200 and super accurate. Much better than a 22.

I would recommend a variable with a reticle with mail dots or hash marks as you want to be able to hold over accurately just past 145 yards. Hold is about 6 inches at 200. I use a fixed 16 power duplex which works ok but looking to get a better reticle.

Man are these accurate. Make sure you spend time checking ammo. They do have their preference.

Sightron are very much worth looking at, I put a SII 6.5-20x50 with mill dot.

Won't break the bank and are higher quality than the price suggest.

IMO on a rimfire don't be afraid of high magnification.

I've got a 5-15x40 AO Bushnell Legend on my CZ 452lh .17hmr. I have no complaints, love the scope so much in this application that i just picked up another in mint condition for my lh Savage bolt in .17m2.

The slight increase in ammo price is irrelevant to me. A good quality 17 HMR rifle is much cheaper than a good quality 223 rifle. Plus for the hunting I do, the 17 can be used for partridge sniping, where as the 223 doesn't really fit a useful purpose.

Not saying I don't like 223, just saying right now I don't like it.

that's fine as long as you are aware of the price of ammo.

What is your budget for s scope? Because without a budget you are going to get vague answers.

My budget is for $500 or under. But as I would really like "tactical" turrets, that budget seems a little unrealistic. Vortex PSTs are $650ish to start at a 2.5-10 power. But once again, I'd prefer a 4-14 power instead.

I would gladly pay the money for good glass, but I have a hard time spending twice as much for a scope as I did for the rifle. After all, it's only a rimfire.
