What I've been up to, my latest build finally coming together.

Well I've been quiet in LR circles but I'm still around. :p Just other things keep taking my attention away. My latest build is one I'm rather excited about, a 7mm WSSM 30º shoulder wildcat. This cartridge is almost literally a scaled up 6mm BR, and was put together earlier this year, to my knowledge the first in Canada. Fortunately, except for the longer length, 7mm WSSM is almost a twin to the 7mm SAUM except roughly half an inch shorter, so modified 7mm SAUM dies can be used, and in my case those are Redding micrometer BR dies. This rifle was practically designed around the 7mm Berger 180gr VLD, with its almost frightening BC of .684, so it sports a 1:8" twist, and a first for me in LR rigs, polygonal rifling. To those unfamiliar with polygonal rifling, picture a stop sign type pattern in the bore, rather than lands and grooves. Supposedly, less bullet deformation results in a higher retained BC, we shall see. The LR world isn't flocking to it in droves so don't drop your single point cut rifled barrels yet :p but it was interesting enough to warrant my attention.

The barrel is 27 1/2" long, #8 contour, Pac Nor Super Match Polygonal. I'm hoping to drive the 180gr Bergers to 2700fps and a hair more ideally, for some serious reach, with VERY light throat/barrel wear characteristics, case capacity is similar to a 7mm-08AI, hoping the fat stubby case and 27 1/2" tube will ring a little extra out of the powder charge. One things for sure, it will be efficient, the basal hydraulics of the 7mm/.284" bullet are good, and the stubby case is as well, then add the .684 claimed BC and she should fly, polygonal rifling notwithstanding. That barrel in the background's it, and it's wearing a Leupold Mk4 M1 16x40mm (roughly 160 mins of elevation) sitting in Mk4 rings atop a 20MOA base. Stock is going to be an aluminum chassis system of my own design, eventually, though for now it's been test fitted in my AICS stage II, Lone Wolf Palma, and now an HS that's coming will likely be the first form until my chassis is done (could be a year). I'm also adding a titanium muzzle brake of my design, not that it needs it but it's more a proof of concept, and fluting the barrel to aid in cooling, but those are also down the road projects. Will be an exciting project, they sure do take awhile to get together though.

Here's my wildcat, center, flanked by a couple of my previous long range 7mm interests, the 7mm-08 on the left and the 7mm STW on the right, all sporting 180gr Berger VLD's.

Ardent, that is very nice and I like the wildcat design. That is good stuff.

Just for LR plinking or do you have F class shooting in mind?

If you look at 6mmBR forum, there are some playing with very toasty loads in 284 and similar sized cartridges and pushing the 180gr Bergers over 2800fps. Some are even suggesting 2900+fps (getting really scary since the 7RM is not rated that fast). Your little project might just surprise you with how well it does.

Hopefully, you can make it out next spring with that toy. Should be interesting to see how those Bergers fly against the really big cannons.

Please post work up numbers. Also, confirm your brass supply as I think the WSSM is toast.

Yep, you never know what it will produce, load development will be very interesting, that's for sure. I'm going to start with safe old H4895, won't be too thrilling results wise, but should get me rolling and do some accuracy testing. Then I'll move to H4350, then likely Varget, perhaps even Retumbo with the 27 1/2" tube. For now it's just for casual shooting, but F class is looking more and more interesting.

Very interesting. Nice looking rig, I like the finish on the barrel, looks like a mirror finish that was blasted with a pattern.

Chrono results in:

40.0gr H4895 180gr Berger 2650fps pressure high, safe, but stiffer bolt lift
47.0gr H4350 180gr Berger 2750fps pressure warm but not really hot yet
44.0gr Varget 180gr Berger 2750fps pressure high
50.0gr Retumbo 180gr Berger 2460fps (just can't fit enough into the case, very low pressure)

This meets or exceeds 7mm Magnum on a LOT less powder, with correspondingly less blast and recoil. I credit the polygonal bore and the stout, fat little high pressure case (WSSM loads routinely run 62,000psi).

Barrel's actually only 27", I mislabelled it as 27 1/2" earlier.

All in all, an impressive showing. I want 2800fps though, anyone have any powder suggestions? I'm going to try a work up on 4350 a bit as there's room for a bit more there, but it'll be a bit warm for my liking. So if you have a powder in mind you think would work well here, please let me know.

As a side note, this thing will send 7mm AMAX's sailing, as they're only 162gr, I will try them next. So far the Berger's shooting insanely well though.

Ardent, You should try treating it with gun juice to get the last 50fps you are looking for. Glad to see that barrel is treating you well. I am going to purchase one. I was just waiting to see how it shot for you.
