I am hoping to buy a k98 in the future sometime but don't know where to buy from and what to expect when i buy it. I was planning on buying a yugo k98 but marstar is sold out so i will go with the german k98 there (russian capture??) for $399. P&S has them for $350 but i don't know if it comes with bayonet and ammo pouches and other accesories like marstar does. Please help me decide so i can start saving :) . And what should i expect to get? Blueing? Wood condition? Bore? Would someone like to post some pictures of their k98 from marstar or P&S?

thanks

P&S is an honest operation with an owner who will talk to you and hand pick your rifle. You can't really go wrong there. :D

good luck

I think P&S has Yugo capture K98's......
The Yugo's did a better job of refurbing IMHO and the rifle should have the cleaning rod and front sight cover where the RC's generally don't.

yeah P&S does but they are a little bit out of my price range. Im mainly looking for something under $400 that shoots good and looks decent just so i can say i have a k98 :D

If you can find one, I recommend the Norwegian Kar98k's that were converted to 30-06

It was a post-war armoury conversion, so they aren't "bubba's"

Like Hitzy said, the Yugo's are generally in better shape than the RC's. They were refurbed to be shooters, not a mixmaster of parts like the RC's. I have a Yugo from Marstar that had the barrel changed in the refurb so it has a mirror bore. It is a great shooter. There are pics of it in the September purchases thread, I used it for a repro high turret project.
If Yugo's aren't available, there is nothing wrong with RC's but you will want to stress bore condition with whoever you buy from if you are going to be using your K98 as a shooter. Some RC's are really shot out.
You may want to do a WTB in the CGN exchange forums for a Yugo. I am sure someone will part with one for less than $400. If you do go the dealer route for it, get one with a very good bore. Metal condition is usually fine for what they are and wood can be serviced if need be.
Both Marstar and P&S are excellent dealers to buy from. Have always had great purchases off both. Call Marstar about the Yugo's. I called after the website stated that the Very good+ K98's were sold out but they had a few more kicking around. Good luck, can't go wrong with a K98!! :D :D

Hey - Don't rule out an Israeli converted 98K in 7.62 nato - Not too collectable and mis-matched; however it's not bubba'd, and it's caliber that's cheaper to shoot. Collector's source has one available for 450.00 - you may be able to find a better example cheaper on the gun show market. Good luck.

Man, I would look at those sweeties!!! The dual code especailly! Nice raer example! I love the k98, you will want more than one :D

those 660 and BCD/AR rifles at P&S are very tempting...very cool codes to have :D

I got an RC from P&S (i lack the money for an all matching wall hanger)and i love it. I am in the process of un-bolshevikifying it and the bore is much better than i expected, it looks almost as if it was re-barreled.
However, if you are not willing to put in the time to bring an RC back to shooting condition, just get a yugo because they have generally been cared for much better than the RC's.

**and no you dont get a bayo, cleaning rod, ammo pouches, case, & front sight hood w/ the RC's from P&S.

marstar also has the yugo M48A. What can you guys tell me about those? aren't they pretty much the same as a k98??

They are nice and they are new, but they are not the quality of a pre-war K98. I handled a few of the new M48's and didn't think they were worth $400.

I've got a well used M48BO (early 50's, but definitely a recent war use rifle) and a 1936 K98, they are both wildly accurate, even with 60 year old surplus ammo. IMHO, an M48 is always 'worth' more than say, a Rem 710, and they're both around the $400 mark.

Yes, pure K98k's are out there and are pricy, but there seem to be many more 'capture' rifles (a nature of history).

I don't know what 'capture series' or whatnot mine is, it has all german markings (weimar in this case), has all the parts and bits that would be missing on a Russian capture, has a near mint bore, is beautifully put together, but is totally and completely mismatched as far as serials go (barrel and receiver match). It has put 3 shots into an inch at 200m with Turk surplus.

Can anyone recommend a good k98k reference book. Is it possible to get a pure k98k that wasn't a capture with just the german markings on it ? Thanks guys.

Backbone of the Wehrmacht by Richard Law is a real good resource for K98's. There are errors but overall it is the 'bible' for German Mausers. Kind of pricey but it does turn up here (I think there is one for sale in the exchange forums) or on Ebay once and awhile. If you are really into K98's, you may also want to check out the second book in Law's series, Sniper Variations of the K98. Also, Peter Senich's The German Sniper is a great book for Mausers.

Pure all-matching K98's tend to be vet bringbacks which at this point, are likely attained through sales of private collections. Just have to keep your eyes peeled. Some captures are very close to all matching, depends on who refurbed them. The Yugo, Norwegian and East German K98's tend to only have the parts replaced that needed it. (barrels, stocks, etc)

Love my two Norwegian rebuilt 98's. One is a BNZ 41 they rebarrled to .30-06 and the other is a G33/40 they left in 8m/m. The G33/40 is one sweet handling Mauser IMHO, and this from an Enfield nut.

Richard W. Ball's "Mauser Military Rifles of the World" is an excellent reference with lots of good photo's. There's a new edition of this one out now that I haven't seen yet. My first edition was 60 and change on a special order through megabucks books/starbucks coffee (Chapters I think?)
