I tried this thread a few weeks back with no pictures. People seemed to think I have a sporterized rifle. I just got a new camera for Christmas, so I'm finally able to upload pictures.

This one's a little blurry.

No4 Mk1*
LONG BRANCH
1943

MkIII and MkII or III. I can't quite tell.

This is the part most that led most people to believe it's sporterized. Although to my untrained eye the metal piece looks old, even original maybe.

You have a No4 MkI* with a cut down barrel, and with what appears to be a No4 forend made to look like a No5, mixed with a No4 handguard and buttstock.

Could you take the front stock band and sling swivel off and get a picture of what is underneath? The upper handguard looks strange.

It is interesting, might be an experimental of some sort but I'm sure someone will let you know soon but I'm guessing a nice sporter.

Not a fan of sporters. However if this is a sporter it is done pretty well. Looks like something like what an experimental carbine might be like HeadDamage noted. I don't know either way but I'd keep it as is if it were in my safe.

Definitely a sporterized No.4 MK1* made by Long branch in 1943. Also looks like its sitting in a No.5 stock set with a standard butt, like mentioned.

Its definitely a sporter, although a neat one. looks like someone tried to do up a No.5 mk1 clone.

So something that was thrown together from whatever spare parts were laying around the factory?

None of the pictures of sporterized rifles I find on the web have a metal cap on the end of the forearm. Can you tell anything else about it's history from the markings?

And apparently this things been sitting in a basement unused for the last twenty years. Any tips for giving it a good deep cleaning?

Any idea what this might be worth?

Anyone notice that the barrel looks like it was off a No1 enfield? Very interesting. Not sure what to make of it. Does the bolt serial number match the receiver? Where abouts are you located?

Bolt and receiver have matching numbers. I'm about 45 minutes north west of Toronto.

I noticed too, but wasnt sure because of the photo quality. Could we get a close-up of the end of the barrel as well?

The battery's charging now. I'll get pictures up soon.

Not a No5 or a No4 cap, neither were secured by a single cross bolt/pin, there was an early style of nosecap for the No5 that was, but it was not shaped like that.

End of the barrel. I'm not sure what the reddish colouring is, it only appears with the flash. If anyone has any other picture requests I'll try and get to them.

What is that??? Im on the fence with it now. Not sure if extreme bubba or what? Have you pulled it apart yet?
looks like a no1 barrel with a sight protector.

I have just to do a basic clean. According to the guy I bought it off it literally sat untouched for twenty years, so it was covered in dust/whatever else. Any other pics you want let me know. Now I'm really getting interested that you guys can't seem to figure it out.

It certainly started out as a Log Branch No.4Mk1*. The buttstock is No.4 and I think the original No.4 forestock was cut back and the metal cap of its forend reused on the shortened forestock. The grooves on the handguard (top wood of the forestock) are consistent with some rear handguards (in that position) on No.4, usually Savage production but certainly some were supplied to LongBranch. I think it has been modified to fit the modified forestock to look like a No.5, as others have said.

The foresight isn't No.4, and if it's No.1 it has a protector that isn't from any Enfield I have seen. I think the original No.4 barrel has been shortened (no bayonet lugs or sight mount) and a non-standard foresight installed.

Front sight protector is a VZ 24 sight protector .......and barrel, by the muzzle and front sight appears to the a No.1 Mk. III unit.
Markings on the barrel chamber will tell real quick.
