What kind of scope is good enough for hunting with SKS?

I know SKS has a close range and not accurate in long range. But I am not planning to be a regular hunter neither. I will go out for a deer or a black bear as big game, and I will only shoot target within 200 yards.

So is 4x scope good enough for SKS in less than 200 yards?

How are you going to mount it? Unless you are drilling and tapping the receiver for a side mount, a scope is not a good option on an SKS. You would be better served with a scout mount and red dot.

I would not shoot at anything with an sks over 75yds. As stated, it's not accuate. Under 75-200 yds is still going to be an unlikely kill shot, even with a scope. Stick with irons and see what you can group at 75yds and under. Even with a scope, anything over 100yds, I'd get closer or not shoot it.

If that's all you have then use it. Don't let others discourage you. I mounted an NC Star with a bolt cover rail, it also had see thru under the rail. Check amazon, I think the rail mount ran me $25. The scope was purchased off ebay for about $65, it was a 4x. With this setup however, I would not try shots over 150yds. But then again my eyes aren't that great.

So I say go for it, you might be surprised how accurate an SKS can be! By the way is it a Chinese or Russian?

my second time shoot with SKS at range, with side mount and a PSOP 6X, my SKS groups roughly about 5''-6'' (did not measure), at 100 yards;
that is good enough to kill a deer at 100 yards
mine is Russian's rifle and Russian's scope...

and I am not a good shoot yet... it could be better if I practice more

in my opinion, you either do not scope it; or scope it this way, because this rail and scope was born for this kind of rifle;

Use SKS ballistic is similar to and old 30-30. Just use iron sight, you will never have any issue that way. Also like lot of people say you should not shoot too far whit that type of ammo. So a scope is really not necessary in my opinion. If you really want one get a small 4X scope.

As I said anything over 100yds, is NOT going to be a kill shot!!!!!!! Even with a scope!

You sure told him.

Are you saying the the rifle isn't capable of making hits in an 8" target past 100 yards, or the projectile couldn't kill anything past 100 yards?
With good ammo and a good mount (scout or receiver) with a low power scope or open sights there is no reason you can't go past 100 yards. The key is to practice at the distances you think you can reasonably and reliably hit your target. There is no magic number for the yardage at which you can/can not hunt with a particular rifle. It comes down to the rifle, ammo and the individual. If you can't hit your targets at 200 yards in practice don't shoot at game at that distance. If you can consistantly hit your targets at 150 yards, go for it.

To the OP, as others have said its likely more of an issue having a solid scope mount rather than the scope itself. There are some after market iron sights for the SKS that might be a better option if you want an improvement over the stock iron sights.

Hitting a steal target that doesn't move is one thing, shooting an animal that you have a chance of wounding rather than killing is another. It's called being a responsible hunter. An sks isn't a hunting gun, it's for military use. AKA redneck hunting gun!

Sorry for the derail folks...

Okay, you are one of those 'it's a military gun so you can't hunt with' people. Whatever, I am not going to change your mind, but what part of my post made you think that I condone being a irresponsible hunter? I just took issue with your statement "anything over 100yds, is NOT going to be a kill shot!!!!!!!" that's kind of an absolute statement without any real info to back that up other than "cuz i said so".

To the OP: People have been successfully and ethically hunting with military rifles long before all the 'internet experts' decided it shouldn't or couldn't be done. Know your limits and make ehthical decisions.

lol

With the iron sights on my SKS I can hit clays at 100m 5 out of 5. Using surplus fmj ammo. I wouldn't mind scoping it though as my eyes aren't getting any younger. Of course I wouldn't shoot at anything other than a target with the FMJ, I've got nice soft points for the moving "targets".

I haven't hit any animal with soft point yet, but I believe that i can shoot rapidly 5 times with SKS, right? I don't think any animal can survive and ran far away with 5 soft point bullets in the torso, not even with 1 or 2. Full grown grizzly bear is another story.

PS: I didn't shoot any animal with FMJ neither.

Wow! Just wow!
