So i was asked this today and i have no idea.
Are they made fome billet that milled out of are the just a thick tube?
looking at my dlask 12ga 12.5" it looks like it was milled from a block of steel,if so would it have to be heat treated after that?
bbb

:) Excellent question.

I believe most shotgun barrels are made from 4140 Chrome-Moly Steel. I'm pretty sure at least Remington barrels are.

Some barrels are formed by hammer forging. This makes for a strong barrel. Others are drilled from billets. I doubt any barrels are made from tubes.

Barrels vary from one maker to another. Old school REM barrels were pretty soft before the 3" Magnums. Mossbergs are softer than Remington, but tougher because of the difference in heat treatment.

Barrels with chrome lined bores and chambers are the hardest. You can tell the difference pretty easily when you've drilled through enough barrels.

made from seamless tubing for sure. now i would guess most would 4140 DOM tubing

there would be no need too machine them from solid bar stock unless there was some type of interrogated feature like a rail.

Well that would be the right thing to do but 4140 tubing thats 1/2" wall thinkness???
Ive not see it .
It would have to be 1/2 min just to be able to have enough meat for the chamber on most shotguns

You said remmy's not norc's or DA's. At least the Chinese stuff seems better than than the Turks.

What? :D Who buys that junk anyway. :p

... and where does it say anything about Norcs an DA's in this thread. :D

Not pointing fingers, just saying. :)

I buy that junk, It's cheap:dancingbanana:. I know it the original question said nothing about Chinese, but it would be good to know what types of steel they use.

This part in the article was enlighting.

"This reflects on the nature of Chinese companies hell-bent on jumping on the country's industrial boom bandwagon. "Most of China's 800-plus steelmakers are small fabricators who have no idea what quality is about"

We'll know that the tide has truly turned when China overhauls and modernizes it's steel industry. The production of steel was seen as a benchmark in the industrialization of China. Meeting quotas, or failing to meet quotas made such a difference to managers and political managers, that the lessons still carry scars. When the people at the reigns allow that industry to change into a world leader, the country will have turned a corner.
