Fun historical fact: The >18" rule was enacted to restrict the M1 Carbine, which was popular and plentiful when the rule was enacted....
...
With all the rules and regulations regarding guns in Canada, the govt bureaucrats have managed to alienate a good percentage of honest people. I have a feeling I am not the only person who feels insulted at being treated as though I was some untrustworthy closet terrorist simply because I own guns.
AR restricted by name.
General rule is: Centerfire semi auto rifles barrel less than 18.5 inches = restricted.
More than 18.5 = NR
That is why we end up with this kind of abberation: restricted 15.5 inch vz 58's and NR 18.5 vz58's
3 inches away from criminal charge. Yes sir.
Yep, and the 105mm rule was for 4 inch pistol's.
There's no discretion on the part of the RCMP when it comes to restricted classification. If it's an AR of any sort, or a non-prohibited semi-auto centrefire rifle with a barrel shorter than 18.5", it's restricted. All others are non-restricted or prohibited.
Best thing to do for your " decked out rifle with the AR look to it" would be to get a cool looking NR rifle to start with EX: Norinco M14 .308 WIN in the $600 ish price range and get even cooler stuff to replace the standard stuff EX: Blackfeather kit for that rifle+ stock and all looks like this

I know it's not an AR but personally i think my example looks better than one (and it's NR). Any ways you get the idea start with something with potential and work with it. When you're done you'll be proud of your build
