What makes military style guns restricted/non restricted?

AR restricted by name.

General rule is: Centerfire rifles barrel less than 18.5 inches = restricted.

More than 18.5 = NR

That is why we end up with this kind of abberation: restricted 15.5 inch vz 58's and NR 18.5 vz58's

3 inches away from criminal charge. Yes sir.

There's no discretion on the part of the RCMP when it comes to restricted classification. If it's an AR of any sort, or a non-prohibited semi-auto centrefire rifle with a barrel shorter than 18.5", it's restricted. All others are non-restricted or prohibited.

The 18" rule came about because crime was rampant with M1 carbine being used..... no wait..... maybe it was because, uh, well, because. Perfect logic in a bureaucrat's little empire. Actually, it came about simply to make life miserable for all the unwashed little people. No other logic need be applied.

With all the rules and regulations regarding guns in Canada, the govt bureaucrats have managed to alienate a good percentage of honest people. I have a feeling I am not the only person who feels insulted at being treated as though I was some untrustworthy closet terrorist simply because I own guns.

I only got my PAL because I felt like a leach borrowing relative's .22's when we were out varminting. After putting up with the bullsh!t and actually reading the Firearms Act laws and regs... I got my rPAL and started buying milsurps and crates of ammo. I have no use for any of it, but screw it. I figure the more I vote with my $$ for the industry and the sport, the better chance we all have of getting some of these stupid laws rescinded.

I've also helped a couple of fence sitters get their permits and first rifles, and am working on adding more to that list. Not one person I know who has gone through the process thinks that the laws make any kind of sense.

There is ZERO logic to any of it.

There should be some discretion. When they duct tape an AR upper onto a new lower and fire one round, destroying the frankengun in the process, and then call the lower an AR variant. Would discretion not be appropriate?

Best thing to do for your " decked out rifle with the AR look to it" would be to get a cool looking NR rifle to start with EX: Norinco M14 .308 WIN in the $600 ish price range and get even cooler stuff to replace the standard stuff EX: Blackfeather kit for that rifle+ stock and all looks like this

I know it's not an AR but personally i think my example looks better than one (and it's NR). Any ways you get the idea start with something with potential and work with it. When you're done you'll be proud of your build
