Somewhat new to firearms and would like some advice! I purchased a 223 savage in hopes of some long range shooting. I paid Just under $400 for it new, does this gun have the potential to shoot 400 to 500 yards with accuracy! I usually buy the American eagle rounds which are just under $11 for a box. Also any other suggestions on other rifles for longer shooting distances? I heard the 22- 250 is a good rifle, not looking to break the bank. I have to keep the wife happy, right now I'm spending $ 200 or 300 hundred a week on rounds! Thanks for any input on this matter!

.223 is a great starter rifle! afordable to shoot and can be very accurate
what modle of savage did u buy? savages are gaining the rep for being very accurate factory rifles these days, HOW EVER the cheap AE ammo is just that, cheap ammo! will it get out to 4-500 yds, easily, will id do it accuratly? no it wont.
if your spending that much $ on ammo per week, dont shoot for a month, buy a reloading set up (you can have a VERY nice set up for under 1000 bucks) and start to load you own. it will bring cost down and will be WAY more accurate.
you will be able to load premium components for about the same price your paying for AE ammo, and the accuracy potential will sky rocket
as for the 22-250 is accurate but a real barrel burner, so unless u want to start rebarreling your rifles, i wouldnt pick it

I'm pretty sure you shoot an axis. It is a 1:9 twist. You will do best with lighter bullets. Your rifle is pretty basic sorry and American eagle factory ammo is far from the best. But still with that and as a new shooter a 1.5" group is pretty good.
22-250 rocks. But only out to about 600m. I find past that the little pebbles loose out.

I agre with everyone, start reloading. You're going to see a measureable difference in accuracy over bulk purchased ammo. By how much? That's anyone's guess at this point.
If I were you and I was looking to move on from the Axis, then I would stay with .223 Remington and buy the best qulity rifle and scope that my budget would allow me. I might even buy beyond my financial means so that I only need to "buy once - cry once".
You might want to stick with the Savage brand or not. There is lots of choice out there competing for your $$$. If looking to spend $1,000 on the rifle alone, I would strongly consider a Tikka Varmint. For the quality, it's virtually unmatched at that price point.

if you dont mind dropping a bit of $ on factory ammo, grab a box of federal gold metal match.. its pretty pricey (about 35 a a box if i reacall) but at 350-400yds you will see the huge differance quality ammo will make over bulk / cheap stuff. with reloading you will get better result then the GMM, but at the cost of the AE

Stevens barrel on an Edge action - now called the Axis and started life as a 308. Mounted a SIIB 36X scope so I can clearly.
With 69gr MK's, leverolution, CCI 450 primers, win brass, it is shooting sub MOA at 300m off a bipod.
I would have prefered a heavier bullet for longer pokes but this rig will be a moderate range shooter just as you are thinking.
With better ammo, there is little reason why your Axis cannot shoot sub MOA at longer distances.
I know of a shooter in the ORA club that due to budget needs started f class with an Edge in 223. He is shooting 75gr amax and has done quite nicely on the 900m target.
Win... no BUT he is having a hoot and learning lots. his reported groups at 300m have been better then mine so accuracy can be had. Just the luck of the draw when it comes to factory pipes.
68 hrn, 69gr MK are super easy to make shoot. for better LR ballistics, 75gr hrn Amax and BTHP, 70 & 75gr Bergers worth a look. Varget is the go to powder.
