Iron sights only guy won a 700 at the Sportsman Show. It hasn't arrived yet and it's gonna need a scope and sling.

If a .223 is good to maybe 300 metres, I don't require super magnification, BDC, milrads or any of that range finding stuff.

I'd like a fine duplex reticle; doesn't have to be illuminated; second Focal Point is fine.

Been recommended a Vortex Strike Eagle 3-18x44, which seems like more scope than I might need. (Price is excellent in the USA; several hundred dollars more here. Thanx, ITAR assclowns.)

GunBlue490 on YouTube has some interesting lectures; especially this one about choosing a scope.

Your suggestion?

Thanx

As usual a question is asked without all the pertinent information required for a good answer.

What critters do you plan on shooting? At what distances? Do you plan on carrying this rifle distances (hence the sling). You also may want a bi-pod?

And what difference does the make and model have on the choice for optic??? Never could understand why people feel the need to include make and model when asking about optics..

Well more information is always better than less... and make is helpful... I would sure recommend different optics for a Savage 340 and a Sako 85.

Why is the 223 only good to 300?
That's according to everything I've read about it. I've never shot one past 200 yards. Hey, it's not a moose cartridge, and lots of folks don't think of it as even a deer calibre, altho I don't see why not.

I have a 6-24x50 on my 700 in 223 and think it's the perfect amount of magnification.
Thank you for letting me (and us on this thread) know.

What's your budget?
Haven't set one. Since the gun is from $600-$1,000 depending on the vendor, I'm not cranked about spending more than that.

Targets for sure.
Perhaps deer if possible here in Southern Police State Ontario.
Coyotes and other varmints, and with any luck, as soon as a season is established and I can secure a tag, Lieberals. ;) (Mods this is only in jest; I'd never shoot a person except in extenuating circumstances.)

At what distances?
Don't know.
Once had a conversation with a coyote pack, the leader of which was about 10 paces away, with numerous pairs of green eyes several meters behind him in the field. Yeah, once outside and face-to-face, I realized jumping up from a sleep at the first bark and running outside wearing only shorts and carrying only a flashlight was stupid.

Do you plan on carrying this rifle distances (hence the sling).
Probably not, altho possibly. I don't know. I have an extra bow/gun sling that doesn't require drilling I can use for the time being.

You also may want a bi-pod?
Unlikely. I can toss my pack under the barrel for a rest if necessary.

Never having owned an actual hunting rifle, I prefer using one of my bows. Longer season too.

Well to get into optics. I'm a leupold fan. I'd go vx3 3.5-10x40. or look at the Swarovski Z3 scopes. I have some vortex scopes and I've just outgrown the optical clarity of the Viper line up. I'm not sure what Zeiss has to offer in your price range.

Why? The purpose of the rifle is far more important than the make or model and we didn't get that info from the OP.

I would recommend the Leupold 3.5-10x40.. it's a beautiful scope for hunting... it was my favorite through my hunting years... set it up with dual dovetail mounts and it is as solid and trouble free as it gets...

I have a 700 VS that has had an old Leupold Vari-X III 6.5-20 x 40 on it for the last 20 years or so. I shoot it out to 500m.
