im posting this here instead of optics because..well just because :)

im getting a .17HMR , and im of two minds as to the magnification to use. i know they can put out a bit more range and accuracy than a .22lr ..
so would a 6x be sufficient, will be using it to its max killing range on rabbits, hares, possums and magpies , and may even do a bit of paper punching.

curious what all you guys are using ?

i was leaning towards a falcon menace

I have Leupold 2-7 power on Sako Quad .17HMR.

I bought it because it was a shop demonstrator so I got a discount. From what I have been reading a 3-9 power is very popular, but I have no complaints with 2-7. I dont think 9x is that much more than 7x.

I use for target shooting (with Harris Bi-pod) and get consistent 1.5 MOA @ 100m

If you intend to use for precision target shooting at 75 m I would go with a higher magnification. But for general purpose 2-7 or 3-9 power should do nicely

I think a variable is the way to go and I like the Bushnell 3200 series. They have some very nice scopes right now.

That's just me though. Go to the store and look through some glass just to be sure you like what you see. A nice clear picture and the right set of cross hairs or mildots or grid or box or whatever you like will make all the difference.

I put a Bushnell 4-16x50 AOEG on my Savage 93R17. I like it, it works great.

I would look at the VXII 6-18AO. I bought the 4-12 for my Sako and wish I would have gone for the 6-18. Nothing wrong with the scope I bought, but the .22 cal holes are pretty small, and the 17cal holes would be even smaller.

Put an old beater Simmons 6-18X40 AO on mine - works great. Don't need super optics on a .17HMR. No recoil to move things and the Simmons has been oustanding for the price.

I've got a bushnell banner "super 17" on mine right now. Its a 3.5-10x by 36mm. I like the scope compared to the tasco abomination I have on my MKII which cost about the same. Scope is clear, has and adjustable AO which actually works (unlike the trashco). At 100 yards, I can juuuuuust barely make out the .17 bullet holes in a target. If I were to do it again, I'd probably stick with bushy for the low cost, but add more power, at least 16x. I have some BDC turrets which came with the scope, but I have never tried them out as I really dont think a $100.00 scope is going to hold a zero with me cranking on the turrets all the time, but who knows, maybe it will.

I have the 4-14x 44mm Falcon menace on two of my .22 rimfires. Very good scopes, especially for the money. I went with them over the Varmint 4.5-18x due to the smaller 44mm bell. The lines fit the smaller rimfires better.

They work great. Side parallax down to 10 yards and out to infinity. It's a FFP scope and the reticle gets bigger. On 14x the reticle gets fairly big but you can still do target work with it. Any bigger and there would be an issue. The glass is very good. Not as good as the top line scopes (NF, Zeiss, Leupold VXIII etc) but then again the price is significantly less. Great features, looks well made, and works perfectly. Also the ML-16 aka MP20 reticle is one of my favourites.

I have the Falcon 4.5-18x 56mm IR as well. Nice scope. They just upped the glass to 94% light transmission the same as the 4-14x 44mm ffp. It'll go on my .223 target/varmint rifles. The 56mm objective I think would look too big on most rimfires. Even the 17HMR.

There are lots of choices out there. Spend the money on a decent scope. Keep in mind there's a difference between buying cheap (ie crap) and getting the best bargain (Very good product at a reasonable price).
