just wondered what other cartridges would shoot through a .410? I was looking at an old H&R from the 1930s and it had .410/ ether .45 or .44 marked on it cant remember, just wondered what aside from slugs could I shoot through my .410 Cooye safely.

theres a good question?? does it matter what choke you have? I have both 44/40 and .45colt ammo laying around....what about .455colt?

How does the power/velocity etc compare between the 45 colt and a 410 slug?

I have ben interested in the old Savage 24's lately. I really like the ability to have a 22 with a shotgun. Was leaning towards a 20 gauge, but this adds a new twist.

not sure but I tell ya I have some .455colt ammo and it packs a dirty wallop ....at least it does in a revolver....blew a hole in the bucket so big I could pass my fist through without touching!! now I wonder if that will shoot through the .410....still would like to find out about if the full choke will handle it.

The .410 slug weighs about a third of a .45 Colt bullet. I know people have used the Colt in their .410s, but I believe results are often less than satisfactory unless the gun is specifically designed to do both jobs.

What kind of pressure do you think is created when you force a .437" or .452" slug down a .410 bore and out through a .395" choke at the end of the barrel .:slap:

Thx rembolt. Safety first eh boys. If it isn't stamped on the gun it isn't safe. Period. Old guns stamped for it before days of plentiful lawyers and lawsuits and also likely intended for soft lead pistol bullets not hard cast or copper plated.

3" .410 Lee Loader = $30
Lee 89gr round ball (.390 diameter) or 95gr 9mm Makarov mold (.365 diameter) = $26
one lb of winchester 296 (enough for 375 shells at about 17.5-18gr per load) = $35
1000 209 primers = $44
Piece of .375 tubing and a rod to punch your wads out = 4 bucks
Old ceiling tile to punch into wads = free

Keeping your eyes and all of your fingers= priceless.

Assuming that nothing untoward happens when a round is fired, what would be the useful range of an elongated bullet fired through a smoothbore barrel?
Can we just forget about rifling?

Some of the newer H+R 410's had a removable choke tube with a rifled insert for firing 45 Colt. (Snake tamer?). Not sure what accuracy was like with only a few inches of rifling at the end of the barrel though.

I would say the useful range is well within reasonable self defense range. If I were our partridge hunting with a 410 and required it for self defense, I would feel much better about a 255gr cast 45 tumbling at an angry bear vs a 1/5oz(87gr) 410 slug. :)
